Open-air cinema on the market square in North Frisia's smallest town
The Open Air Kino Bredstedt is one of the younger summer festivals in Schleswig-Holstein – and at the same time one of the most technically modern. Instead of the classic stretched screen, projection is done with a large LED screen, which provides a clear image even in ambient light. The event format is a cooperation between Stadtmarketing Bredstedt, initiator Ralph Ettrich, and private sponsors (GP Joule for renewable energy, Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse).
Bredstedt is located in the North Frisian hinterland between Husum and Niebüll. With around 5,000 inhabitants, it is North Frisia's smallest town with town rights and has positioned itself as the region's economic and marketing hub in recent years. The market square is the heart of the historic old town and offers a charming backdrop for an open-air cinema.
The festival runs for three consecutive days (Thursday-Saturday) in early July. Two screenings are planned each evening – an earlier family screening (film start 4:00 PM) and a later main screening (film start 9:00 PM after sunset). Doors open one hour before the film starts.
The admission concept is explicitly family-friendly: Children under 15 years old free, adults €5. A very low threshold for a diverse film offering. Food is provided by the food truck Sam, a popcorn stand, and a wine bar – classic cinema atmosphere plus modern summer street food character.
Open-air cinemas have their own tradition in Northern Germany – the Bredstedt format relies on the combination of market square ambiance, modern LED technology, and sponsor partnerships. Thus, it is both a conceptual innovation and embedded in the typical neighborhood festival culture of Schleswig-Holstein.
Stadtmarketing Bredstedt and initiator Ralph Ettrich announce the 2026 Open Air Kino for the three days from July 2 to 4, 2026. The exact film schedule will be published on bredstedt.de in the weeks before the festival, as in previous years.
Two screenings are planned per evening – an early family screening at 4:00 PM and a late main screening at 9:00 PM (after sunset). Doors open one hour before the film starts. The film selection typically includes current family films for the early screenings and summer mainstream as well as selected independent productions for the late screenings.
The specific film program will be published by Stadtmarketing Bredstedt in the lead-up to the festival (June 2026) on bredstedt.de.
