Mannheim's Big Autumn Volksfest

The OKTOBERMESS Mannheim is, alongside the Mannheimer Maimarkt, the most important Volksfest in the city of squares — and the largest autumn Volksfest in the entire Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. In 2026, it runs from September 26th to October 11th, for 16 days on the festival grounds in northern Mannheim. The organizer is VTM Mannheim (Veranstaltungen Tourismus Marketing erleben GmbH), responsible for most major city events in Mannheim. Admission to the festival grounds is free.

Opening with Beer Tapping

The Oktobermess opens on Saturday, September 26th, 2026, at 5 PM with the traditional beer tapping ceremony by the City of Mannheim. The festival tent and rides open with the tapping. Over the following two and a half weeks, daily festival operations will take place with the classic special promotions and highlights.

Two Firework Evenings and a Family Program

Highlights of the Oktobermess 2026 include the two firework evenings on Friday, October 2nd, and Friday, October 9th, each starting at 10 PM. The large stage fireworks over the Mannheim festival grounds are among the most popular attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Additionally, there are two Happy Monday days (September 28th and October 5th) with special offers and two Family Days (October 1st and October 8th) with half-price rides — an established VTM tradition for young families.

Opening Hours and Festival Operations

The Oktobermess is open from Monday to Thursday and Sunday from 1 PM to 10 PM, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 PM to 11 PM. Extended opening hours apply before public holidays. This allows visits to be flexibly planned around school, work, and weekends.

The City of Squares as a Festival Ground

Mannheim, with its approximately 320,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart and the economic, cultural, and educational center of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The unique city layout in squares (founded in 1606 by Elector Frederick IV) gives Mannheim a distinctive urban landscape. The Oktobermess, as an annual autumn Volksfest, has been firmly anchored in the city's collective memory for generations and forms — alongside the Maimarkt in May — a second, equally important Volksfest pillar for the city.

VTM Mannheim manages the festival and ensures the organizational stability required for a 16-day major Volksfest in a large city. Showmen from Germany and abroad travel to Mannheim year after year, with new rides added each year, while classic fairground attractions remain. The city's society celebrates in the festival tent, and visitors sample Mannheim and regional specialties in the food stalls.
