Annual Oktoberfest at Herzogenplatz in front of Uelzen Town Hall — tent festival with keg tapping, Bavarian specialties, and live music
Oktoberfests have spread throughout Germany — and the world — in recent decades. What began as a Munich tradition is now a flexible festival format celebrated as a proper Volksfest in many Northern German cities. Uelzen joins this tradition with its annual Oktoberfest.
Herzogenplatz, in front of Uelzen Town Hall, is one of the central squares of the Hanseatic city. The historic Town Hall with its brick architecture forms the backdrop for the Oktoberfest tent. This combines Northern German Hanseatic city architecture with Bavarian festival atmosphere into a characteristic mix.
The traditional keg tapping on the opening evening is the ceremonial start of the Oktoberfest — a direct adaptation of the Munich Wiesn tradition. A representative of the city administration or a guest of honor taps the first keg, and with the first Maßkrug, the festival weekend officially begins. The beer tent becomes the social center.
The gastronomic offerings follow Bavarian tradition: Weißwurst with sweet mustard and pretzels for Frühschoppen, Hendl (grilled chicken), Schweinshaxe, Schweinebraten, Käsespätzle, Sauerkraut, and of course, draft beer served in Maßkrugs. Vendors have set up their stalls in and around the tent.
The musical accompaniment consists of Oktoberfest classics — Bavarian folk songs, party music, and modern Schlager — played by professional Oktoberfest bands. The audience sings along to classics like „Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit“ and „Anton aus Tirol“. The bands often wear traditional costumes themselves.
Dirndls and Lederhosen are explicitly welcome and contribute to the Wiesn atmosphere. Those who don't have traditional attire can come in normal clothes — no one feels excluded.
The Oktoberfest Uelzen transforms the central Herzogenplatz into a Northern German Wiesn for a weekend.
The exact date, band lineup, and special promotions will be published by KTS Uelzen.
