Traditional Bavarian May Volksfest on the outskirts of Munich
The Oberschleißheimer Volksfest was founded in the 1970s by local clubs and is now a firm fixture in the Bavarian spring calendar. The festival is organized jointly by the Municipality of Oberschleißheim, FC Phönix Schleißheim, RSV Schleißheim, and experienced festival host Robert Schmidt. It takes place on the Volksfest grounds on Theodor-Heuss-Straße, about 14 kilometers north of Munich's city center in the district of Munich.
The centerpiece is the large festival tent with table service at long wooden benches. The festival beer is supplied by Remonte Bräu Schleißheim eG, a small cooperative brewery located right in town. The festival tent kitchen serves classic Bavarian delicacies: roast chicken from the rotisserie, pork roast with dumplings, Leberkäse, Weißwurst, grilled fish on a stick (Steckerlfisch), as well as typical side dishes like sauerkraut salad or Obatzda.
The festival traditionally begins on Wednesday or Thursday with a parade of local clubs from Bürgerplatz to the festival tent, led by a brass band. The reigning mayor taps the first beer keg. This is followed by various themed evenings: Father's Day, Senior Citizens' Afternoon, "Day of Companies and Authorities" with a dance orchestra, "Day of Clubs" with a party band, and on Sunday morning, a church service in the festival tent followed by the Festival Tent Olympics, hosted by Michi Dietmayr.
Around the festival tent, amusement rides provide a folk festival atmosphere: bumper cars, a chain carousel, a classic children's carousel, shooting galleries, lottery stalls, and sweet stands with candied almonds, gingerbread, and chocolate-covered fruits. The Family Day with reduced prices is particularly popular with families from the Munich commuter belt.
Those who wish to combine their visit to the Volksfest with an excursion should visit the famous Schloss Schleißheim with its New and Old Palaces and the palace park in French Baroque style. Also in the immediate vicinity are the Schleißheim Aircraft Museum, an outpost of the Deutsches Museum, and the Regattaparksee – formerly the Olympic rowing course for the 1972 Games.
From May 13th to 17th, 2026, the Volksfest grounds on Theodor-Heuss-Straße in Oberschleißheim will once again transform into a Bavarian festival site with a large beer tent, carousels, and amusement rides. The festival opens on Wednesday with a parade of local clubs and the brass band, followed by the traditional beer tapping by Mayor Markus Böck.
On the program: Father's Day special on Thursday (Ascension Day), Senior Citizens' Afternoon and "Day of Companies and Authorities" with a dance orchestra on Friday, "Day of Clubs" with a party band on Saturday, church service in the festival tent with brass music on Sunday, followed by the third edition of the Festival Tent Olympics, hosted by Michi Dietmayr.
