Nordstraße — Pempelfort's small shopping mile
Nordstraße is one of the liveliest shopping streets outside Düsseldorf's city centre — featuring owner-managed boutiques, cafés, restaurants, bars, and specialty shops. It is located in the Pempelfort district, one of Düsseldorf's densest and most popular neighbourhoods, situated between Hofgarten and Derendorf. The Nordstraßenfest is the annual self-presentation of this neighbourhood — the district celebrates itself, and Düsseldorf joins in.
Programme — Culture, Gastronomy, Shopping
The festival is a typical medium-sized Düsseldorf neighbourhood festival: stage programme with local bands and artists, food trucks and specialty stalls from Nordstraße's gastronomy, hands-on activities for families (face painting, bouncy castle, small stalls), pop-up stalls by retailers in front of their shops. Live music changes throughout the day — pop, indie, jazz, occasionally DJ sets.
Sunday Shopping
The event is framed by Sunday shopping in Pempelfort: Shops along Nordstraße and neighbouring streets open on September 27, 2026, from 1 PM to 6 PM. Thus, the festival combines the classic neighbourhood festival format with retail activation — a typical North Rhine-Westphalia model for lively Sunday neighbourhood mobilisation.
Pempelfort — Düsseldorf's student quarter
With approximately 32,000 inhabitants, Pempelfort is one of Düsseldorf's most densely populated districts. Popular with students, creatives, and families — the Heinrich Heine University is nearby, as are Düsseldorf's northern nightlife spots. Pempelfort is considered Düsseldorf's "bohemian quarter" with a distinct café culture. The Nordstraßenfest is the most important annual neighbourhood event, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the city.
