The grand cultural festival of the Upper Palatinate — four days of music, theatre, literature, and traditions in Roding
The Bavarian Nordgautag was established in 1948, at a time when the Upper Palatinate needed to redefine itself culturally and in terms of identity — on the edge of Bavarian cultural landscape, between the forests of Eastern Bavaria and Czechoslovakia. The organizer is the Oberpfälzer Kulturbund e.V., which has since hosted the event in alternating cities within the region. Previous venues included Amberg, Weiden, Regensburg, Neumarkt, Cham, and many others. Roding will be the host for the first time in 2026.
The motto connects Roding's three identities: Stadt (the historic market town with its market square culture), Land (the rural districts and the agricultural tradition of the Cham district), and Regen (the river of the same name that flows through Roding and leads into the Bavarian Forest). The content will explore urban culture, village traditions, and the landscape culture of the Regen valley over the four days.
During the Nordgautag, Roding becomes a stage: the large Esper-Gelände as the main event area, community centres and schools, the town hall, parish churches, galleries, and inns — over 20 locations will host concerts, readings, exhibitions, and performances. The programme ranges from a festive opening concert with the Nordbayerischer Musikbund to modern DJ sets and live bands, from street theatre to classical speeches.
The Nordgautag is both the preservation of tradition and contemporary cultural work. The programme shows that Upper Palatinate culture exists not only in traditional costumes and brass band music but also in young literature, graffiti workshops, and electronic music by young Upper Palatinate artists. School art competitions, participation from associations throughout the Cham district, and a focus on engaging the younger generation round off the festival.
The Nordgautag 2026 is a fourth edition that tests the format of the grand Upper Palatinate cultural marathon in a medium-sized market town. Roding itself contributes enormously with the participation of its associations, schools, parishes, and businesses to the programme. Even before the event, a school art competition, association meetings, and logo and poster development are underway.
The four-day format distributes the focus: Thursday with the opening act and festive concert, Friday with a focus on literature and visual arts, Saturday as the big festival day with a parade and several parallel stages, Sunday with a family programme, a religious ceremony, and the closing.
