SHMF concert at NordArt — Nils Landgren, Vincent Peirani, Michael Wollny and the Festival Orchestra
What is happening here in the Carlshütte in Büdelsdorf is a premiere for two of Schleswig-Holstein's cultural heavyweights: NordArt, one of the largest international exhibitions of contemporary art in Europe, and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF), one of Germany's most important classical music festivals, will share the same stage for two evenings — the monumental industrial hall of the former Carlshütte in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district.
The Carlshütte in Büdelsdorf is a former iron foundry founded in 1827 — Schleswig-Holstein's oldest industrial facility. Since 1999, the site has served as an exhibition space for NordArt, which runs annually from June to early October. The enormous halls with their raw industrial architecture, high ceilings, and unusual acoustics are temporarily transformed into concert halls for the SHMF concerts — a spectacular fusion of contemporary art, classical music, and industrial culture.
Founded in 1986 by Justus Frantz and Leonard Bernstein, the SHMF fills around 200 venues between the North and Baltic Seas every summer — barns, churches, industrial halls, and concert halls. The concept: top-tier music in unconventional spaces, often far from the metropolises. The NordArt evening is among the most tightly booked program items of the year — the monumental hall is usually sold out for both performances.
Büdelsdorf is a town of around 10,000 inhabitants in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, located immediately northwest of the city of Rendsburg. The Carlshütte site — now a cultural area and NordArt location — is the town's defining point of identification.
The two performances feature the same lineup and take place in the monumental Carlshütte hall — a former iron foundry with impressive industrial architecture. NordArt 2026 runs concurrently from June 6 to August 15 and is partially accessible with the concert ticket (prior guided tour of the exhibition).
