Festive New Year's Concert with the Staatskapelle Halle in the historic Ständehaus
The Merseburg Ständehaus is one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Originally the seat of the provincial estates, the magnificent festival hall now serves as a concert venue with excellent acoustics. On January 3, 2026, it will become the stage for the traditional New Year's Concert, which, with the Staatskapelle Halle, marks one of the important musical dates in southern Saxony-Anhalt.
The concert will be led by Andreas Wolf, an experienced conductor specializing in classical music and operetta. The soloists will be South Korean soprano Hyejin Lee and tenor Chulhyun Kim — both regular guests at Bühnen Halle. The program includes works by Georges Bizet, Jacques Offenbach, Gioachino Rossini, Johann Strauss (Son), Johann Strauss (Father), Carl Zeller, Franz Lehár, Luigi Arditi, and Emmerich Kálmán — covering the full spectrum from concert classics to the silver age of operetta.
The Staatskapelle Halle is one of Germany's most traditional orchestras, with roots dating back to the 16th century. Today, it is the resident orchestra of Bühnen Halle and regularly performs at important venues in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The New Year's Concert in Merseburg is one of its regular concert series outside of Halle.
Merseburg is one of the oldest bishopric cities in Central Germany — the Merseburg Cathedral, with its unique Merseburg Incantations (10th century), is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. The city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Saalekreis district, is located about 15 km south of Halle and is easily accessible by S-Bahn. The New Year's Concert is a must-attend event for classical music enthusiasts from Halle and Leipzig.
