Schloss Wilhelmsburg — Pure Renaissance
Schloss Wilhelmsburg in Schmalkalden (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, Thuringia state) is one of Germany's most significant Renaissance buildings. Built from 1585 to 1590 as a secondary residence for the Hessian Landgraves, the castle has been preserved in its original state to a large extent. The castle church with its Renaissance organ and the stucco ceilings of the interiors are among the most beautiful achievements of this architectural period in Germany. Today, Wilhelmsburg Castle is a museum and event venue.
2026 Concert Series — From Choirs to Depeche Mode
Wilhelmsburg Castle is a versatile concert venue. In 2026, the program showcases its full range: from "Thuringian Choral Treasures" (June 19–21, three days of choral music from Thuringia) to the "Stimmwechsel" concert (August 22, 6:30 PM–8:00 PM) and the "Depeche Mode Trilogy" (September 6) — the latter being an original crossover format that brings the synth-pop classics of the British band to the Renaissance castle courtyard.
Classical Music in the Castle Courtyard
On September 5, "ViAGGiO IN PARADiSO" will perform — a classical program featuring Baroque and Romantic music. The main series concludes on October 10 with a concert by the South Thuringian Chamber Orchestra in the historic rooms. Accompanying events include school concerts ("Students Play for Students" on May 20) and special events such as an art auction on July 5.
