Four Days of Advent Magic in the Renaissance Castle Courtyard
Merseburg in the Saalekreis district is one of the oldest bishopric towns in Central Germany – founded in the 9th century, a favourite imperial residence of Henry I in the 10th century, later the seat of a bishopric and an Evangelical cathedral church, which remains one of the major sacred buildings in Saxony-Anhalt to this day. Merseburg Castle, expanded in several stages in the 15th and 16th centuries, combines late Gothic and Renaissance styles into an ensemble that, together with the cathedral and the cathedral cloister, forms one of the most impressive historical cityscapes in Saxony-Anhalt.
When the Merseburg Castle Christmas opens on the second weekend of Advent, it does so in an inner courtyard that has a strong impact even without Christmas decorations: arcades on two sides, the Renaissance facade of the castle to the north, and the cathedral cloister to the south. This architecture, illuminated by hundreds of lights, adorned with fir trees and a large nativity scene, defines the character of the Castle Christmas.
The Castle Christmas focuses on a curated mix of regional crafts, mulled wine and bratwurst stands, and a daily changing stage program. Performances by the Merseburg Court Music, the Cathedral Choir, and regional school choirs shape the atmosphere. Unlike the commercial city Christmas markets, the scale remains manageable – only a few dozen stalls, but very carefully selected.
Merseburg is located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, at the transition from the Saalekreis district to the Burgenlandkreis district and the Saale-Unstrut wine region. Visitors to the Castle Christmas can combine their stay with a wine tasting in Bad Lauchstädt, a walk along the Geiseltalsee lake, or a guided tour of the cathedral with the world-famous Merseburg Incantations.
The city of Merseburg invites exhibitors with a focus on regional crafts and culinary tradition to the Castle Christmas 2026 again. Stalls will be set up in the castle courtyard, the Renaissance arcades will remain accessible, and the cathedral courtyard will be accessible via the connecting gates. On stage, school choirs and children's activities alternate during the day, while regional artists and ensembles perform in the evening. The highlight is traditionally a concert by the Merseburg Cathedral Choir in the cathedral itself.
The complete stage program with performances by school choirs, bands, and associations will be published by the city of Merseburg in November 2026 at merseburg.de/schlossweihnacht.
Merseburg station is reachable via the S-Bahn line S8 from Halle (Saale) in 12 minutes. From the station to the castle: approx. 15 minutes on foot or by city bus. Parking available at Schlossgarten and Domklausur.
Free admission. Individual events (e.g., concerts in the cathedral) may be subject to a charge.
Thursday and Friday 3 PM - 8 PM, Saturday 11 AM - 8 PM, Sunday 11 AM - 6 PM. Stage program starts at 5 PM (Thu/Fri) or several times a day (Sat/Sun). Note: In extreme cold, the duration of stay in the castle courtyard may be limited – cloakroom in the castle is not available.
