33rd Edition — Festival celebrating the potato in the Leipzig district
Naunhof, a quiet small town about 20 kilometers east of Leipzig in the Leipzig district, has preserved a festival tradition rooted in agriculture: the potato festival. What began in 1992 as a small community festival is now a three-day folk festival celebrating the town's identity with the potato as a regional staple food. The festival is considered the highlight of Naunhof's autumn calendar and attracts visitors from the entire Mulde region.
The venue is the historic market square with the festival stage and the adjacent town estate, which is filled with showmen's stalls, amusement rides, and a festival tent. The culinary diversity is the focus: potato pancakes, potato soup, stuffed baked potatoes, potato fritters, garlic potatoes, and specialties from regional potato farmers from the Leipzig area are offered. In addition, there is classic folk festival catering with bratwurst, lard pastries, and beer.
Regional clubs, choirs, dance groups, and cover bands take turns on the main stage. The festival traditionally opens with a parade and the official welcome by the mayor. For children, there is a special program with carousels, craft stations, and face painting — a selection of beekeeping demonstrations is also regularly featured, as the Naunhof beekeepers' association is one of the town's most active clubs.
The combination of folk festival, culinary delights, and rural atmosphere makes the Naunhofer Kartoffelfest a typical example of Saxon community festival culture. Families, Naunhof locals, and day-trippers from Leipzig alike use the first weekend in September to kick off the autumn festival season.
The 33rd edition continues the long-standing festival tradition. The festival opens on Friday evening with the tapping of the keg and the first stage program; Saturday is family day with children's activities and an all-day stage program; Sunday features the traditional parade through the town center.
The City of Naunhof, as the organizer, will publish the detailed daily program a few weeks before the festival on naunhof.de and naunhoferkartoffelfest.de.
