Traditional Schützenfest in Nordenham's district of Boitwarden
The Wesermarsch is one of the regions in Northern Germany where the Schützen (shooting club) tradition is particularly vibrant. Throughout the year, Schützenfeste take place in almost every district — coordinated by the Schützenbund Wesermarsch, which bundles the most important events in its schedule. The Schützenfest Boitwarden is part of this dense festival culture and exemplifies the close connection between club life, village community, and North German tradition.
The central highlight of every Schützenfest is the king's shoot. The marksmen compete to win the honor of Schützenmajestät (shooting majesty). In addition, there are competitions for cups, youth, and club members. The festive parade, usually accompanied by a marching band and participants in traditional shooting attire, winds its way through the village. This is followed by the ceremonial crowning of the king with the presentation of the chain of office, crown, and trophy.
In the evening, the marquee fills with families, club members, and guests. Live music, dancing, hearty food, and good beer characterize the festive evening. Schützenfeste in the Wesermarsch are intergenerational events — the youngest enjoy the children's shoot, while the older generation celebrates in familiar festival grounds.
The 2026 edition falls in early May. The Boitwarden Schützenverein is preparing the festival with the usual lead time — from marquee rental and organizing the marching band to registering the shooters for the king's shoot.
Like all Schützenfeste in the Wesermarsch, the Boitwarden festival thrives on the commitment of its club members and the solidarity of the village community.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Boitwarden Schützenverein. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
