Arts and Crafts at the UNESCO World Heritage Naumburg Cathedral
Naumburg is located in southern Saxony-Anhalt, at the confluence of the Unstrut and Saale rivers, in the Burgenlandkreis district. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2018—primarily due to its Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, considered one of the most outstanding examples of European High Gothic architecture. The west choir of the cathedral, with its twelve donor figures, is the work of an unknown artist known in art history as the Naumburg Master. His figures of Uta, Ekkehard, Reglindis, and the others are among the iconic works of the Middle Ages.
It is precisely this master, who drove the artisans of his time to peak performance as early as the 13th century, that the Naumburg Cathedral has chosen as the patron for its annual arts and crafts market. Since 2012, the Cathedral Garden—the idyllic garden between the church, cloister, and ambulatory—opens in early June for arts and crafts exhibitors. 2026 marks the 13th edition.
The concept focuses on artisans who demonstrate their craft on-site—not just manning a sales booth. Those present at the market will be potting, weaving, forging, turning, or engraving before the eyes of visitors. The spectrum includes: ceramics, jewelry, textiles, woodwork, printmaking, glass, and metalwork. Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia dominate regionally, with some exhibitors coming from further afield.
The Children's Cathedral Construction Site is active on both days—a museum education workshop introducing children aged four and up to medieval craft techniques. Stone carving on sandstone, painting wall frescoes, braiding chain mail. Concurrently, discounted cathedral tours are offered, allowing the market to be combined with a visit to the World Heritage site.
Visitors to the market should take time to explore Naumburg. The old town with its market square, St. Wenzel's Church (with the world-famous Hildebrandt organ), and the Wengen houses can be explored in a 15-minute walk. The Saale-Unstrut wine region begins just outside the city gates—Steigra, Freyburg, and Bad Kösen are nearby. Naumburg weekends can be well combined with wine tasting and a cathedral tour.
The event is organized by the United Cathedral Foundations of Merseburg and Naumburg. The format has been refined over the twelve previous editions: exhibitors in the Cathedral Garden, live demonstrations at their stands, alongside a family program in the Children's Cathedral Construction Site and Cathedral tours. Experience shows that several thousand visitors come to the garden over the weekend.
