Three Festivals in One — Wine, Pottery, and Barrel Organs
The Naumburg Wine Festival marks the season finale for the Saale-Unstrut wine region — and at the same time, it's much more than just a wine festival. Three events merge on the last weekend of August into a three-day city festival that is unparalleled in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Naumburg in the Burgenlandkreis district: the actual wine festival with vintners from Germany's northernmost wine region, the traditional pottery market with around 60 ceramic artists from across the country, and the atmospheric barrel organ festival with about 20 barrel organ players who parade through the old town.
The setting is the heart of Naumburg's old town: the Holzmarkt serves as the center with a stage and wine stalls, the Marktplatz (market square) belongs to the potters, and the Hohe Lilie is the stage for the barrel organ players. In between, the city pulses with life, the Wenzelskirche church hosts organ concerts, the pubs and cafés are bustling, and the citizens of Naumburg celebrate the harvest with their guests.
Saale-Unstrut — Germany's Northernmost Wine Region
With just 800 hectares of vineyards, the Saale-Unstrut region is Germany's smallest wine-growing area — and with over 1000 years of wine tradition, it is also one of the oldest. Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, and increasingly Riesling thrive on the colorful sandstone steep slopes above the Saale and Unstrut rivers. At the wine festival, nine to twelve wineries from the region serve their vintages — including established names like Weingut Herzer, Winzerhof Gussek, and Weinhaus Vollandt. Those who immerse themselves in the Holzmarkt can sample their way through the region's offerings from stall to stall.
WeinkultOr — The Musical Heart
Running parallel to the wine festival is the WeinkultOr Festival: behind this wordplay lies the musical supporting program with live bands on the Holzmarkt stage. Acoustic acts, singer-songwriters, jazz combos, and party bands take turns performing — as the sun sets behind the towers of Naumburg Cathedral, perhaps the most atmospheric part of the weekend begins.
Pottery Market and Barrel Organ Tradition
Starting Saturday morning, around 60 ceramic artists from all over Germany set up their stalls in the market square. The range of goods extends from rustic jugs to delicate porcelain bowls, from berry bowl dishes to sculptures. The barrel organ festival, finally, makes it acoustically clear that an old tradition lives on here: around 20 barrel organ players from Germany and Europe crank their instruments through the old town, with the grand finale taking place on Saturday evening at the Hohe Lilie.
