Art, music, and industrial backdrop in the listed historic Alte Spinnerei
The Alte Spinnerei Mainleus is a listed industrial building from the late 19th century — a former cotton mill in the Franconian market town of Mainleus (Kulmbach district, Upper Franconia region). The high brick halls with their cast-iron columns and saw-tooth roofs are a typical example of early industrial architecture in Franconia. For several years, the site has been transformed for cultural interim use: concerts, art and cultural markets, flea markets, and festivals like 'Klangfunken' liven up the halls.
The Nacht der Künste is the official festival opening of the cultural series at the Spinnerei. Starting at 6 PM, the complex transforms into an accessible art space: installations by local and regional artists are created in the halls, live music is played at several stations, and performances and light art expand the industrial backdrop into a total stage.
Mainleus is located on the western edge of the Franconian Forest, in the valley of the White Main river, just under 10 kilometers west of Kulmbach. The area combines rural Upper Franconia with a rich industrial history (porcelain factories, mills, breweries). Today, the Spinnerei itself is a focal point of local cultural work and is highlighted in the market town's event calendar.
The market town of Mainleus lists June 6, 2026, as the Nacht der Künste — Festival Opening Spinnerei Mainleus in its online event calendar. Start time: 6 PM. Details about the program (artists, bands, performances) will be published a few weeks before the event, as is customary for season openings.
The cultural series at the Alte Spinnerei regularly combines: visual arts (painting, sculpture, installation), live music from the experimental/electronic/jazz/folk spectrum, performances, and light art. Previous highlights included the Klangfunken festival and art-culture flea market days. The opening night traditionally sets the tone for the coming season.
The exact list of artists, band names, and sets can be viewed via the event calendar of the market town of Mainleus and notices at the Spinnerei. Contact: Markt Mainleus, Phone 09229 878-0.
Price information will be announced via the event calendar of the market town of Mainleus. Based on experience, expect a symbolic entrance fee or free access with bar and catering services on site.
By train: Accessible via Bayreuth or Kulmbach, Mainleus is on the Frankenwaldbahn railway line. By car: A70 exit Kulmbach/Stadtsteinach, then B85 towards Lichtenfels to Mainleus. Parking available at the festival grounds.
The Alte Spinnerei is located on the western outskirts of Mainleus (Spinnereistraße 9, 95336 Mainleus). Start of the Nacht der Künste: 6 PM. Catering and food available on site.
Combine your visit with a day trip to Kulmbach (Plassenburg castle, Bavarian Brewery Museum) or a hike in the Franconian Forest.
