A Mill Becomes a Cultural Stage

The Alte Spinnerei Mainleus is a listed industrial building from the late 19th century — a former cotton mill in the Franconian market town of Mainleus (Kulmbach district, Upper Franconia region). The high brick halls with their cast-iron columns and saw-tooth roofs are a typical example of early industrial architecture in Franconia. For several years, the site has been transformed for cultural interim use: concerts, art and cultural markets, flea markets, and festivals like 'Klangfunken' liven up the halls.

The Nacht der Künste — Opening of the Summer Season

The Nacht der Künste is the official festival opening of the cultural series at the Spinnerei. Starting at 6 PM, the complex transforms into an accessible art space: installations by local and regional artists are created in the halls, live music is played at several stations, and performances and light art expand the industrial backdrop into a total stage.

What Shapes the Evening

• Art Amidst Brick Walls — Sculptures, installations, paintings, and mixed-media works directly in the former mill halls.
• Live Music — Bands and DJs from various genres perform in the courtyards and halls.
• Cultural Collective Atmosphere — not a classic gallery format, but an open evening with creative improvisation, freely accessible spaces, and encounters between artists, creators, and the audience.
• Industrial Backdrop as the Star — the patina of the brick walls, the cast-iron skeleton, and the play of light between steel beams are themselves part of the staging.

Mainleus and the Upper Main Valley

Mainleus is located on the western edge of the Franconian Forest, in the valley of the White Main river, just under 10 kilometers west of Kulmbach. The area combines rural Upper Franconia with a rich industrial history (porcelain factories, mills, breweries). Today, the Spinnerei itself is a focal point of local cultural work and is highlighted in the market town's event calendar.
