Ten-day Bavarian Volksfest with a parade in Kemmelpark
The Murnau Volksfest is the most important Volksfest in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Kemmelpark every year. It is organized by the market town of Murnau, whose municipal council sets the program and dates in close coordination with the festival hosts. A special touch: For several years, the festival has placed a clear emphasis on sustainability — reusable cup systems, regional food, energy-efficient lighting.
For several years, the festival host has been Robert Schmidt from Straubing — a nationally known Volksfest host, renowned for excellent catering, Franconian and Bavarian dishes, and a diverse music program. The festival tent features live music every day — from hearty brass music during the day to party bands in the evening.
The Volksfest traditionally opens on the first Friday with a parade through Murnau to Kemmelpark — led by traditional costume groups, shooting guilds, the fire department, and music bands from the Werdenfelser Land. This is followed by the first beer tapping in the festival tent by the mayor or a guest of honor.
Hallmarks of the Murnau Volksfest are its recurring themed evenings and days: The Manyana Monday Party brings Spanish summer vibes to the festival tent on the first Monday. On Family Day (usually Wednesday), there are discounted rides, a children's program, and admission with family discounts. The Senior Citizens' Afternoon on the same day offers a quieter musical program and discounted meals for older guests.
The market town of Murnau a.Staffelsee, with just under 12,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, located about 70 km south of Munich on the lake of the same name. Murnau is famous for its connection to the Blue Rider: Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter lived and painted here. The Bavarian Prealps with the Wetterstein massif, Karwendel, and Ammergau Alps form the backdrop — one of the most beautiful landscapes in the state of Bavaria.
The 2026 edition of the Murnau Volksfest brings ten days of Bavarian Volksfest atmosphere to Kemmelpark. It opens on Friday, July 11th with a parade through Murnau and the subsequent beer tapping in the festival tent. Festival host Robert Schmidt from Straubing will be in charge of catering.
Highlights of the festival week include the Manyana Monday Party on July 14th (Spanish summer theme in the tent) and the Family Day with Senior Citizens' Afternoon on Wednesday, July 16th, with discounted ride prices and a children's program. The market town of Murnau continues to emphasize sustainable festival operations in 2026 — reusable items, regional suppliers, energy-efficient lighting.
