Upper Bavarian Traditional Costume Festival at Großweil Village Square
Großweil is a small Upper Bavarian municipality in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, located about 10 km north of Murnau am Staffelsee. With around 1,500 inhabitants, Großweil is one of those small Werdenfelser villages where traditional costume associations and village festival culture have shaped social life for generations. The Großweil village festival on July 19, 2026, is one of them.
The organizer is the Trachtenverein D'Rötlstoana Groß- und Kleinweil — one of the oldest associations in the region, actively preserving Upper Bavarian traditional costumes and customs. The name D'Rötlstoana refers to the characteristic red stone of the region. The association organizes the village festival annually in the village square, right in the heart of the historic village center.
Traditional costume wearers, Schuhplattler dancers, folk music (often a Stubnmusi or Tanzlmusi), delicacies like Weißwurst, pretzels, Leberkäs, homemade cakes — all in the shadow of the Werdenfelser mountains. In addition, there is a children's program, a wheel of fortune, traditional games, and catering by the families of the traditional costume association. A festival strongly supported by the community and club life.
Großweil is located on the edge of the Murnauer Moos landscape and near the Staffelsee — one of Upper Bavaria's most beautiful lakes with islands and a distinct recreational landscape. The village itself has remained small, quiet, and authentic. Visitors to the village festival should combine the day with a hike in the Murnauer Moos or a boat trip on the Staffelsee.
The Großweil village festival is an annual constant. The date varies slightly — usually a Sunday in July or August — but is communicated well in advance via the municipal website and the local newsletter. Sunday, July 19, 2026, is listed in the Großweil municipality's 2026 club calendar.
The 2026 edition of the Großweil village festival continues the annual tradition of the Trachtenverein D'Rötlstoana. From 11:00 AM, the traditional costume association will open the festival at the village square with welcome performances, Schuhplattler dances, and folk music.
Throughout the day, traditional costume performances, Stubnmusi, and catering will alternate. The village festival is a classic family gathering for the Werdenfelser region — without tourist staging, supported by the clubs and families of the village.
