Munich celebrates its city birthday in the Old Town
Munich dates back to 1158, when Henry the Lion founded the city at the Isar crossing. The City Founding Festival commemorates this event every June. Organized by the state capital Munich, it is a public festival with free admission in the heart of the Old Town.
The centerpiece is the main stage at Marienplatz. The festival is opened by the Lord Mayor together with the city council and the Böllerschützen (traditional riflemen). This is followed by brass music, the traditional Moriskentänzer dance, and a diverse stage program with numerous bands.
At Odeonsplatz, Munich craft businesses showcase their skills live in the craft village, complemented by a Ferris wheel, children's carousel, game stalls, and diverse gastronomy – a Volksfest (traditional folk festival) in the heart of the city.
At Rindermarkt, the "Irish-Bavarian" stage connects the cultures of Bavaria, Ireland, and Scotland with Irish Trad groups and Celtic sounds. The Alter Hof offers a dedicated children's program.
Under the motto "A Festival of the Districts," the City Founding Festival highlights the diversity of Munich's districts and celebrates the identity of the city and its people.
The 2026 edition of the Munich City Founding Festival celebrates the city's 868th birthday on June 13th and 14th under the motto "A Festival of the Districts." The festival opens on Saturday at 1:00 PM by Lord Mayor Dominik Krause, accompanied by the city council and Böllerschützen.
The program is spread across several locations in the Old Town: Main stage at Marienplatz, craft village and Volksfest at Odeonsplatz, "Irish-Bavarian" stage at Rindermarkt, and children's program in the Alter Hof.
Detailed stage program will be announced on muenchen.de.
Right in the Old Town – take the S-Bahn (S1–S8) or U-Bahn (U3, U4, U5, U6) to Marienplatz or Odeonsplatz. Travel by public transport is strongly recommended, as access to the Old Town for cars is severely restricted.
Admission is free. Food, drinks, and rides are subject to charges.
Saturday approx. 10:30 AM–11:00 PM (depending on location), Sunday approx. 11:00 AM–9:30 PM.
