Historic Black Forest Mill opens for German Mill Day on Whit Monday
The Schillingerhofmühle in the Pechofental valley of the Freiamt municipality (Emmendingen district, Baden-Württemberg state) is among the most beautiful historic mills in the central Black Forest. Built in 1802 as a grain mill, it is considered a cultural monument and was fully restored to operational status in 1997. Today, you can experience the authentically preserved milling mechanism in operation on special days.
Across Germany, around 650 historical mills open their doors to the public on German Mill Day. The Schillingerhofmühle participates in this traditional event every two years. On Whit Monday, the secluded mill in the Pechofental transforms into a lively meeting point for visitors from the entire region.
The mill has been owned by the Schillinger family for generations, who lovingly care for the preservation of the building and its technology. Outside of Mill Day, visits are possible by prior arrangement – often combined with a hearty snack (Vesper). A rare opportunity to experience a living piece of Black Forest mill history up close.
Freiamt is known for its intact cultural landscape with numerous historical mills, farmhouses, and orchards. The Pechofental valley is scenically located amidst forests and meadows – an ideal starting point for a hike that can be combined with a visit to the mill festival.
On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, the Schillingerhofmühle will once again be open to visitors for the nationwide German Mill Day. During milling demonstrations, you can experience the mill mechanism, built in 1802 and fully restored in 1997, in action. The local heritage association (Heimatverein Freiamt) will present traditional crafts – from wool spinning and knitting to straw shoe weaving. Regional food and drinks will be available. The festival takes place every two years and is a popular draw for mill enthusiasts from the Black Forest and the Emmendingen region.
The Schillingerhofmühle is located in the Pechofental valley in Freiamt. Accessible by car via the L113 from Emmendingen. Parking facilities are signposted nearby.
Admission to German Mill Day is usually free. Donations for the preservation of the mill are welcome.
