Atmospheric Advent market on the first weekend of Advent in the historic monastery courtyard and church
The Ebstorf Monastery, one of the six Lüneburg Heath monasteries and a former Benedictine convent, opens its historic monastery courtyard on the first weekend of Advent for one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Lüneburg Heath. The centuries-old walls, the monastery church, and the old farm buildings form a backdrop that is perfect for the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of Advent.
Unlike loud, commercial large markets, the Ebstorf monastery market deliberately focuses on candlelight and subdued lighting. Wooden huts and open stalls are decorated with candles, lanterns, and natural materials. This creates an intimate, almost meditative mood that invites visitors to linger.
A beautiful tradition: The historic Ebstorf Marksmen's Guild v. 1289 takes over the ceremonial guarding of the market. In their traditional costumes and with their historical insignia, the marksmen are present and embody the centuries-old connection between the monastery and the community. It is a living piece of tradition that makes the market unique.
The offerings focus on arts and crafts and regional products: handmade ceramics, wood carvings, jewelry, candles, felt items, Christmas decorations. The culinary offerings include mulled wine, hot apple punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, roasted almonds, gingerbread, and sweet pastries from the region.
The monastery church opens during the market for small concerts and contemplative services. Brass choirs, Advent music, and children's choirs utilize the excellent acoustics of the historic space. Those seeking a moment of silence will find it here between the market bustle and Advent contemplation.
A special feature is the community bus connection from Bad Bevensen, which makes it easier for visitors without their own car to get there. The community bus connects the nearby spa center with Ebstorf, making the monastery market easily accessible for day-trippers from Bad Bevensen.
