A Festival That Turns the Neighborhood into a Stage

In May 2026, the mowe Festival for Art and Urban Culture will transform the Berlin districts of Moabit and Wedding into an expansive festival space. Over 47 venues, more than 100 artistic contributions, three festival days — curated by the Berlin collective POLIGONAL (Lukas Staudinger and Christian Haid). The organizer is the Initiative Kunst im Stadtraum (Art in Urban Space Initiative) in cooperation with the Mitte Borough Office.

What Makes mowe Special

Unlike traditional art festivals, mowe takes place not in galleries or museums, but in the urban space itself — on parking decks, in daycare centers, in calisthenics parks, in pubs, on rooftops. The format reflects the districts where it takes place: Moabit and Wedding, two of Berlin's most diverse and rapidly changing neighborhoods. Both belong to the Mitte borough, both represent a specific blend of migrant urban society, working-class tradition, universities, and the new creative scene.

Program Pillars

  • Concerts and Live Music
  • Performances in public spaces
  • Readings and literary formats
  • Exhibitions in apartments, backyards, studio spaces
  • City Walks with architects and urban researchers
  • Bike Tours — e.g., a tour of the district's queer heroes
  • Open Studios by local artists
  • Participatory Formats: Jam session at Kugelbar, drag-guided workouts in the calisthenics park, collaborative painting at Kita Pankonauten

Focus: Queer Perspectives and Urban Culture

The mowe concept explicitly emphasizes queer perspectives, urban culture, local networks, and new artistic collaborations. Over 350 applications were submitted for the 2026 edition — more than 100 contributions were selected, featuring a mix of international artists, experienced professionals, and new voices from the neighborhood.

Mitte as a District of Diversity

The Mitte borough encompasses not only the tourist center around the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island — it extends to Moabit, Wedding, and Gesundbrunnen. This "other" Mitte is one of Berlin's most vibrant, migrant-influenced neighborhoods. The mowe Festival makes this identity accessible to a broad urban public and is simultaneously a contribution to an urban culture that charts its own course beyond the cliché of the "new creative Berlin.".
