Halle-Neustadt — the underestimated district
Halle-Neustadt was built from 1964 onwards as a socialist model city for around 100,000 inhabitants — today one of the largest prefabricated housing estates in Germany and a district with a complex history. Long considered a problem area, Halle-Neustadt has been developing into a culturally diverse district for years. In 2026, the Mosaik Festival will be created here — a new format aiming to make this diversity visible.
First Edition — Free and Open
The Mosaik Festival takes place from June 4th to 7th, 2026 — four days of programming on five stages in Halle-Neustadt. The organizer is the Mosaik Festival Initiative, supported by district stakeholders, associations, and Halle-Neustadt's cultural scene. The festival is free and open to all — a conscious decision against admission barriers in a district where money is not always abundant.
Program Profile
The program profile is broad: music from various genres (hip-hop, folk, indie, pop, international music from local communities), art and performance, readings by authors from Halle and Halle-Neustadt, dance formats. The stages are spread across several squares and courtyards in the district — you wander, discover, and linger. The concept consciously recalls district festivals in Berlin-Wedding or Frankfurt-Bornheim — with its own Halle-Neustadt character.
In the State of Saxony-Anhalt
Halle (Saale) is an independent city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt — the largest city in the state. Halle-Neustadt has been a district of Halle since 1990 (previously an independent city). The Mosaik Festival is part of a broader movement to communicate Halle-Neustadt not just as a prefabricated housing cliché, but as a culturally diverse place. 2026 is the first edition — with the ambition to build a long-term tradition.
