Cult open-air on the Black Forest high plateau between Wolfach, Schramberg, and Hornberg
The Moosenmättle Open Air is one of the oldest open-air festivals in the region, deeply rooted in the Black Forest's festival culture. Since its first edition, the festival has brought regional and international bands to the Moosenmättle high plateau on the Liefersberg — a geographically exceptional location: at around 800 meters altitude, in the heart of the Central Black Forest, on the border between three municipalities (Wolfach, Schramberg, and Hornberg), accessible only via a small road. Those who drive up here know: the festival is small, intimate, almost familial — and that's precisely its charm.
From the very beginning, the organizers have made sure not to be just a pure rock festival. Over the two days, bands from all over Europe and overseas alternate on the main stage — Hard Rock and Classic Rock as well as Industrial Post Punk, Psychedelic Rock, and Alternative Punk. This genre diversity is a conscious programming statement: the Moosenmättle crew seeks out international bands each year that are difficult to see elsewhere — from Chile, Australia, Ireland, Spain, France.
The 42nd edition spreads its program over two festival days:
The motto: "2 Days • 1 DJ • 6 Bands" — a compact, carefully curated selection, not an endless lineup like at large festivals, but quality over quantity.
The festival grounds are located at the intersection of three municipalities in the Ortenau district (08317): Wolfach (around 5,800 inhabitants, known for the old wood dam paths and the raft pilot fountain), Schramberg (the "Valley of Three Castles", home of the Junghans watch factory), and Hornberg (the castle from the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, "Hornberger Schießen"). For those staying longer, combining the festival with a Black Forest weekend is recommended — hikes at the Hexenlochmühle, a visit to the Black Forest Open-Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof, a look around Schramberg.
The festival cultivates a distinct campfire atmosphere: a central area in front of the stage, a second area slightly off to the side for the night shift, beer served in steins, and Black Forest specialties at the food stand. Camping is part of the concept — most visitors stay overnight directly at the venue.
From Friday, August 7th, to Saturday, August 8th, 2026, the traditional Moosenmättle Open Air enters its 42nd edition. On the high plateau at Liefersberg — at about 800 meters altitude between Wolfach, Schramberg, and Hornberg — fans and bands meet for two days of Rock, Punk, Indie, and Hard Rock.
For decades, the festival has maintained an international booking concept: six bands from six countries, with a clear focus on acts that are hard to see elsewhere. In 2026, these include GentleMaad! from France, Frank's White Canvas from Chile, Amy Montgomery from Ireland, and Mannequin Death Squad from Australia. Campfire atmosphere, camping directly at the festival grounds, and Black Forest idyll characterize the weekend.
