Two days of medieval market with over 40 craft and merchant stalls at the 1000-year-old Düben Castle — April 11 and 12, 2026
Düben Castle in Bad Düben (Nordsachsen district) is one of Saxony's oldest castle complexes. First mentioned in 981 as "urbs dibni" in the chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg, it was rebuilt in the early Renaissance after its destruction in the Saxon Brothers' War in 1450 and served, among other things, as the court for the famous lawsuit of the horse dealer Hans Kohlhase against Günter von Zaschnitz (literarily adapted in Heinrich von Kleist's "Michael Kohlhaas"). Today, it houses the Dübener Heide Landscape Museum. Against this thousand-year-old backdrop, the Medieval Spectacle takes place every April — for the 14th time in 2026.
Over the two festival days, more than 40 craftsmen and merchants in medieval attire gather on the castle grounds. You will experience: hand spinners and weavers creating fabrics from loose sheep's wool; jaw harp makers crafting the centuries-old folk instrument from steel; blacksmiths forging horseshoe nails, knives, and small tools at open fires; potters at the wheel; leatherworkers making belts and pouches; bowyers shaping longbows from yew wood. In addition, there are merchants selling medieval clothing (linen shirts, wool cloaks, laced bodices), jewelry (bronze, silver, copper), mead (honey wine), herbal products, and wooden toys.
Several mock combat demonstrations per day bring knightly battles to life in the castle courtyard: knights in full armor — chainmail, plate armor, helmet — face each other with swords, battle axes, and morning stars. Foot-based lance thrust demonstrations show accuracy against moving targets. Minstrels accompany the events with medieval instruments — hurdy-gurdy, shawm, bagpipes, davul. Jesters, jugglers, and fire-eaters perform between the mock combat displays. For children, there is a special program with storytelling sessions, guided archery, and hands-on workshops.
Several taverns and food stalls provide visitors with medieval dishes: suckling pig over an open fire, "Kräuterflader" (large flatbreads with cheese and herbs) baked on hot stones, cabbage rolls with millet porridge, mead from clay jugs, dark unfiltered beer. The ambiance — open fires, wooden benches, camp tents of the medieval groups — creates a dense historical atmosphere.
Bad Düben is located in the Nordsachsen district, about 30 km northeast of Leipzig and 30 km south of Wittenberg, at the gateway to the Dübener Heide Nature Park. With around 7,400 inhabitants, the town has been a state-recognized moor spa since 1948 — one of the few in Saxony. Düben Castle, the oldest preserved watchtower "Lug ins Land," the Mulde river with its floodplain forests, and the 75,000-hectare Dübener Heide Nature Park make the town a popular excursion destination. The Medieval Spectacle, along with the Summer Concert, is the town's most traditional festival.
On April 11 and 12, 2026, Düben Castle opens its gates for the 14th time for the Medieval Spectacle. Both days from 11 am until late evening, the castle courtyard transforms into a medieval market village with over 40 craft and merchant stalls, several mock combat demonstrations per day, and continuous music and jester entertainment.
The organizer is COEX from Cottbus, an experienced medieval event agency with decades of tradition in Lusatia and Nordsachsen. The historic setting — one of Saxony's oldest castle complexes, first mentioned in 981 — lends the spectacle a special authenticity.
Specific times for combat demonstrations will be posted at the entrance and published on vehi-mercatus.de.
