An 800-Year-Old Castle as a Festival Backdrop
High above the Ailsbach valley in the Franconian Switzerland lies Burg Rabenstein, one of the oldest preserved castles in Bavaria. Its first documented mention dates back to the 12th century; today it is a hotel, event venue, and one of the most famous medieval sites in the state of Bavaria. Twice a year, the entire complex becomes the scene of a large medieval market that attracts visitors from all over Germany and neighboring countries.
The Spring Edition
The spring edition takes place at the end of May or the beginning of June, depending on the Whitsun holidays. It is considered particularly atmospherically charming because the fresh green of the Franconian Switzerland perfectly complements the historic castle backdrop, and the days are long enough to experience the medieval camp even after sunset. For four days, camp groups from all over Germany live authentically according to medieval models, cook over the fire, and demonstrate historical crafts.
Program and Atmosphere
The program includes:
- Knight tournaments and combat demonstrations several times daily on the tournament grounds
- Performance artists: fire-eaters, jugglers, acrobats
- Market stalls with craftsmen (blacksmiths, bow makers, leatherworkers, basket weavers, potters)
- Puppet theater and children's program
- Medieval music on several stages
- Fire show every evening
- Medieval food from pans and spits, as well as mead and beer from clay jugs
Significance for the Region
With tens of thousands of visitors per event, the Burg Rabenstein medieval market is one of the most economically important tourist magnets in the district of Bayreuth and the Franconian Switzerland. The organizer is Burg Rabenstein Event GmbH; many camp groups have been regular guests for years and return regularly. The spring market, alongside the summer market in early August, is a firm fixture in the Franconian festival calendar.
