Mettlach Kicks Off the Market Season
When the first market stalls are set up on the Mettlach market square and the florists arrange their Easter displays, the Saarschleifenland knows: the market season has begun. The Mettlach Easter Market is the first in a series of four seasonal markets that Saarschleife Touristik GmbH organises throughout the year in Mettlach (Easter, Pentecost, Summer, and Autumn Markets).
Three Days of Spring
The market runs over the Easter weekend — from Holy Saturday to Easter Monday — and takes advantage of the central location of the market square in front of the former Benedictine Abbey. Under the shady trees and along the market fountains, there are over 20 stalls: floristry with spring and Easter arrangements, wood and felt crafts, jewellery, candles, soaps, regional sweets, honey, and specialities.
In the Saarschleifenland
Mettlach is located in the Merzig-Wadern district at the gateway to the world-famous Saarschleife — Germany's most beautiful river bend. Those who extend their market visit over the long Easter weekend often combine it with the view from the Cloef, the treetop path in Orscholz, or a stroll through the neighbouring Villeroy & Boch outlet.
Market Atmosphere with Tradition
Saarschleife Touristik carefully curates the selection of exhibitors: regional manufactories, Saarland and Palatinate artisans, along with a few guests from the Greater Region. Mass-produced goods are not the focus of this market — rather originality, quality, and attention to detail. This is how the Mettlach Easter Market distinguishes itself from larger, more tourist-oriented spring markets.
Culinary Delights
The culinary offerings are classically Saarlandic-Luxembourgish: bratwurst and Schwenker (grilled sausage) from a charcoal grill, Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), fresh baked goods from Mettlach bakeries, coffee, and cake. In the neighbouring Café Mettlacher Hof, the market day can be rounded off with a slice of Saarländer Streuselkuchen (crumb cake).
