King's Shoot and Coronation Schützenfest of the Bürger- und Sportschützenverein Herbede 1850 in the Witten district of Herbede
Founded in 1850, the Bürger- und Sportschützenverein Herbede (BSV Herbede) is one of the oldest and most identity-shaping clubs in the Witten district of Herbede. The annual Schützenfest is the central club and district event — in 2026, it will follow the proven two-stage structure: King's Shoot on June 6, Coronation Festival at the end of June.
The event kicks off with the King's Shoot on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Hof Brückelmann. The candidates for king gather at the traditional club stand and, according to the old modus, determine the new Schützenkönig (Shooting King) — whoever shoots down the last splinter of the wooden eagle becomes king and, with his queen, forms the representative couple for the next club year. It is a rather internal affair, not a major event — the public impact comes three weeks later.
Three weeks after the King's Shoot, the public Schützenfest with the coronation proclamation follows:
Herbede is a southern district of Witten in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia. Until 1929, Herbede was an independent town — and this awareness has been preserved in the district's life. The BSV Herbede 1850 is a central pillar of this identity, along with the Catholic and Protestant churches, the sports club, and voluntary associations. The Schützenfest is clearly distinct from the Herbede Festival Days (September) — the latter is a district festival, while the Schützenfest is a fraternity festival with a King's Shoot and coronation ritual.
The 2026 edition follows the proven two-stage structure. The King's Shoot on June 6 is the determining act — the new king is chosen from the candidates according to the old modus. Three weeks later, from June 26 to 28, the public Schützenfest with a parade, coronation proclamation, and marquee program follows. Entry in the official calendar of the Schützenkreis Witten.
Admission to the parade and marquee is free. King's Ball may be subject to a charge (tickets from BSV Herbede).
Witten-Herbede can be reached via the S 5 (S-Bahn Hagen–Dortmund) to Witten-Herbede station. By car, take the A44 (exit Witten) or the A45 (exit Hagen-Nord). Parking is available near the festival grounds.
Admission to the parade and the marquee is free. Individual evening events (King's Ball) may be subject to a charge.
The grand parade on Saturday, June 27, is a must for anyone who wants to see the marksmen in full uniform and the entire district come together. The King's Ball on Sunday is the most festive part of the event.
