Four Years of Open-Air Electronics at Kemnader See
The LIBELLA Festival is one of the youngest and fastest-growing festivals for electronic music in the Ruhr area. Since its premiere edition in 2023, it has established itself at Kemnader See in Bochum as a fixture — with impressive stage designs, a growing range of genres, and an atmosphere that uses the industrial monument Zeche Gibraltar as its backdrop. The 4th edition will take place on July 10 and 11, 2026.
Four Stages, 40+ Artists, Two Days
Unlike the larger Ruhr-in-Love, LIBELLA pursues a more compact concept: four stages, over 40 artists, two festival days. This makes the atmosphere more intense and allows for truly switching between stages and experiencing all genres. The organizers speak of "top acts from techno, bounce, schranz, trance and 100% festival feeling".
Day 1 — Hardtechno and Industrial
On Friday, July 10, 2026, the main stage will be dominated by Hardtechno and Industrial. This day is reserved for the harder side of electronic music — uncompromising beats, driving industrial soundscapes, Gabber, and Schranz elements.
Day 2 — Four Stages in Parallel
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, the full program will run with all four stages:
- Mainstage — Techno and Bounce
- Rave Solution Stage — Hardtechno
- Hafen7 Stage — Trance and Bounce
- Newcomer Stage — local talents and aspiring artists
The Newcomer Stage is a special feature: DJs can submit their 30-60 minute sets via an open competition. The winners get a festival slot — a real promotion platform for the Ruhr area DJ scene.
Zeche Gibraltar — From Coal Mine to Festival Grounds
The festival grounds at Zeche Gibraltar on Kemnader See have a special industrial history: hard coal was mined here until 1973. After its closure, the site was repurposed as part of structural change, and the lake was dammed — today, it's a local recreation area for Bochum and Hattingen residents. The industrial architecture of the former colliery forms the stage set for the festival, thus combining the Ruhr area's sense of identity with contemporary dance culture.
Genres and Atmosphere
The LIBELLA Festival clearly positions itself in the harder spectrum of electronic music — Techno, Bounce, Schranz, Trance, but also calmer Trance sets on the Hafen7 stage. The crowd is predominantly young (minimum age according to the organizer), the atmosphere intense. Those who attend the festival should prepare for a direct, uncompromising vibe — and a colorful, friendly festival family.
Bochum — Ruhr Area with Festival Character
Bochum is the cultural center of the Ruhr area, with its Schauspielhaus (theater), Symphony Orchestra, Bermudadreieck (entertainment district), and an active music scene. Kemnader See in the south of Bochum is one of the region's most important recreational lakes. Those combining the LIBELLA Festival with Bochum sightseeing should plan for the Bermudadreieck between the train station and the city center — an extensive pub mile that has much to offer after the festival.
