Medieval market and Viking spectacle at Witten's Hafen Heveney — two festival days at Kemnader Lake
The Medieval Spectacle at Kemnader Lake combines a classic medieval market with a Viking theme. The concept "The Vikings Are Coming" signifies a special focus, where Nordic warriors, their tents, and customs play a central role. The venue is Hafen Heveney at Kemnader Lake in Witten-Blumenau — on the opposite side of the lake from the public outdoor pool.
Kemnader Lake is a reservoir created by the Ruhr dam, located south of Bochum within the Witten municipal area — a popular local recreation area with a sailing school, outdoor pool, and hiking trails. Hafen Heveney, with its pier, is the largest lakeside facility and is suitable for large events. A recreated medieval village backdrop with Viking and knight tents and a central wooden stage transforms the location into an authentic medieval setting for two days.
On the wooden stage, four main acts alternate: Cradem Aventure — musicians presenting medieval music with bagpipes and drums, accompanied by choreographed dances. Mumpitz Duo — comedy and music in the style of medieval jesters. Lupus — master juggler with several performances per day. Knight Fight Arena — armored warriors demonstrate sword and shield combat in a cordoned-off arena, with explanations for the audience. In addition, market traders will offer crafts, food, drinks, and live craft demonstrations (blacksmith, coppersmith, jewelry makers).
Unlike in previous years, there will be no Viking ships at the pier in 2026 — they are currently undergoing maintenance. However, the concept continues to emphasize the Viking theme on land with Nordic tents and performers in appropriate attire.
Witten is a city in the southern Ruhr area with around 95,000 inhabitants, located on the southern edge of the Ennepe-Ruhr district on the Ruhr River. Kemnader Lake, as a Ruhr reservoir, forms one of the region's most important local recreation areas — the organizers of the Medieval Spectacle have deliberately chosen this location: it offers the necessary space, is easily accessible, and has suitable infrastructure for multi-day events at Hafen Heveney.
A recreated village backdrop, Viking and knight tents, a wooden stage — Hafen Heveney transforms into a medieval setting for two days. Cradem Aventure plays music with bagpipes and drums, the Mumpitz Duo offers juggling, and Lupus juggles in several sessions daily.
In the central arena, armored warriors demonstrate sword and shield combat. Dragon Fangdorn visits the grounds three times a day — a performance for families and children. Market activities with crafts, food, and drinks at the stalls around the stage.
