Where the Saalekreis Celebrates Its Open-Air Weekend
The Merseburg Castle Festival is one of Central Germany's most distinctive city festivals. Three days, three venues, one concept: Rock and Metal in the ticketed Castle Garden, party and DJ sets in the free Castle Courtyard, Medieval Market and a grand procession on the Cathedral Square. The festival takes place every year in June and is one of the absolute summer highlights in the Saalekreis district.
The festival is organized by the city of Merseburg in cooperation with Rockland, the Sparkasse, and regional media partners. The setting couldn't be better: Merseburg Castle sits enthroned on a sandstone cliff above the Saale river, next to it the over 1000-year-old Cathedral with the famous Merseburg Incantations. Right here — in the Castle Garden — an open-air arena is created for three days, where metal headliners perform for several thousand spectators.
Two Free Stages, One Rock Arena
The festival relies on a well-thought-out three-location setup. The Castle Garden hosts the ticketed Rock & Metal Arena — here the headliners and the main bands of the three days perform. The Castle Courtyard features a free DJ party — an open-air party zone with drinks, beats, and festival atmosphere. The Cathedral Square hosts the Medieval Market with crafts, food, jugglers, and music. Result: You can experience the festival without a ticket — via the courtyard, market, and procession — and only book the Castle Garden for the concerts.
Festival Culture in the Forefront of the Burgenlandkreis
Merseburg is centrally located in the Saalekreis, about 30 kilometers from Halle (Saale). The city with its approximately 33,000 inhabitants has a long history as a bishop's seat and residence city — and with the Castle Festival, a modern highlight that has been growing for years. The booking clearly targets the German rock, metal, and medieval spectrum: Bands like Hämatom, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Tanzwut, Subway to Sally, or Saltatio Mortis have performed here multiple times. Over 30 acts per year, plus the massive procession on Sunday — in a league of its own in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
