Arts and Crafts and Pottery Market on Merseburg Cathedral Square in golden October
Anyone who knows Merseburg knows the ravens: The famous legend of Bishop Thilo von Trotha and the raven that allegedly stole the bishop's ring is tied to the cathedral. To this day, ravens are kept in a cage in the castle courtyard — and the market on Merseburg Cathedral Square proudly bears its name. The Rabenmarkt takes place twice a year: at Pentecost as a large spring market, and in October as a smaller, more intimate Herbst-Rabenmarkt. The venue is the historic Domplatz in front of the medieval Merseburg Cathedral.
What distinguishes this market from many others is the strict admission policy: only "masters of their craft, professionally" exhibit, meaning workshops and businesses for whom arts and crafts are their main profession — no hobbyists. This is reflected in the quality: pottery in all glazes and forms, jewelry made of silver and wood, textiles of linen and wool, wooden toys and kitchen utensils made of ash and maple. If you are looking for a high-quality Christmas gift, this is the place to be.
In addition to arts and crafts, regional producers present their specialties: wine from the nearby Saale-Unstrut wine region, cheese, sausage, liqueurs. The Jens Eckner winery and the Huffziger catering team provide refreshments. Live music is provided by the duo Liedfass with folk and singer-songwriter tradition — a cozy, acoustic accompaniment for strolling through the stalls.
Merseburg is located in the Saalekreis district, just a few kilometers south of Halle (Saale), and is one of the oldest bishopric cities in Central Germany. The cathedral, the castle, and the cathedral cloister form an architectural ensemble of European importance. The celebration takes place directly on the Domplatz, and the city can be perfectly combined with the market this weekend. A visit can be combined with a guided tour of the cathedral or the castle complex — both just a few steps from the market.
On October 24 and 25, 2026, Merseburg's Domplatz will transform for the twelfth time into a marketplace for professional arts and crafts. Pottery, jewelry, textiles, wooden toys, and kitchen utensils — all from their own workshops, all with a commitment to quality. Additionally, Saale-Unstrut wines, regional cheese platters, and the duo Liedfass with folk music.
Note: The list of exhibiting artisans will be published on the official website in September 2026.
