Medieval hustle and bustle in the monastery grounds of the former Cistercian Abbey
The Mittelaltermarkt Fürstenfeld takes place in the historic monastery grounds of the former Cistercian Abbey of Fürstenfeld – one of Southern Germany's most significant Baroque monastery complexes. The impressive monastery church (by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi, built in the 18th century) forms the backdrop for three days of medieval conviviality. The market is part of the established Turbaevents markets, which fill the summer with medieval open-air events in several Bavarian cities.
The event concept focuses on four central pillars of experience:
The concept emphasizes hands-on experience: visitors can ask craftspeople questions, participate in archery stations, and interact with jesters. The atmosphere is family-friendly and accessible.
The former Cistercian abbey was founded in 1263. The current Baroque monastery church is one of the most beautiful of its kind in all of Bavaria – almost UNESCO-worthy, and certainly one of the most famous sacred buildings of Bavarian Baroque. The monastery grounds today house, among other things, the Monastery Museum, the Fürstenfelder event hall, gastronomic establishments, and the Fürstenfeldbruck city library. A medieval market on such grounds is the ideal combination of historical backdrop and market atmosphere.
Fürstenfeldbruck, with around 37,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the District of Fürstenfeldbruck, located west of Munich on the Amper river. The town is directly connected to Munich Central Station via the S-Bahn line S4 (approx. 25 minutes) – making the medieval market an easily accessible day-trip destination for Munich families.
The 2026 program fully utilizes the large monastery grounds: the central market area, the tournament grounds, the encampment areas for reenactment groups, and several musician stations are spread across the site. Visitors wander between the stations and are integrated into the medieval setting.
The main attractions are the knight tournaments on the tournament grounds, the blacksmith demonstrations (real iron forging with a forge), the glassblower demonstrations, and the jester troupes. The camp life is created by reenactment groups from all over Bavaria and offers a credible medieval atmosphere.
Taverns and food stalls offer medieval-inspired cuisine: suckling pig from the spit, stews, mead, medieval beer, bread. The catering is part of the atmosphere and is served in appropriate vessels (clay mugs, wooden plates).
Klosterareal Fürstenfeld, 82256 Fürstenfeldbruck. S-Bahn: S4 from Munich HBf directly to Fürstenfeldbruck (approx. 25 min.), then approx. 10 min. walk to the monastery grounds. Car: A96 (exit Fürstenfeldbruck-Ost), signposted parking at the monastery grounds.
