Traditional Martini market in Wittingen's city center with rides and market stalls
Martini markets are among the oldest market events in many North German cities. They are closely linked to St. Martin's Day on November 11th and date back to the medieval right to conclude legal transactions, renew leases, and purchase supplies for the winter on this day. The Martinimarkt has also been a firm fixture in Wittingen's city calendar for a long time.
The concept of the Wittingen Martinimarkt combines two worlds: the amusement park with rides and carousels, and the flea market with sales stands. Both complement each other and appeal to different visitor groups. While the youngest enjoy the carousels, bumper cars, and shooting galleries, parents and grandparents look for bargains, seasonal products, and gift ideas at the market stalls.
The culinary side of the market is a tradition in itself. Candied almonds, gingerbread, potato pancakes, crepes, bratwurst, Schmalzkuchen (lard cakes), and mulled wine are part of the typical atmosphere. Regional specialties such as Wittingen beer from the local brewery can also be found.
Wittingen is a small town on the border between the Gifhorn district and the Lüneburg Heath and the Wendland region. The historic city center with its half-timbered houses and the market church of St. Stephanus provides a charming backdrop for the market. The Wittingen brewery and the Bohlsener Mühlen-Werk are among the nationally known companies in the town.
The market follows the proven format of previous years. The rides will be set up on the central market square: carousels for the youngest, bumper cars, Ferris wheel memories, shooting galleries, dice games, and smaller attractions for all ages.
In the surrounding streets, the flea market stalls spread out: household goods, toys, sweets, clothing, leather goods, tools, gift items, and bric-a-brac are offered. The gastronomic stalls with Schmalzkuchen, potato pancakes, and mulled wine ensure the typical Martini atmosphere. The market is particularly cozy in cool autumn weather.
