Autumn around the Elisabethkirche
When the Lahn meadows glow in mid-October and the first chestnut leaves fly through Marburg's alleys, the Elisabethmarkt comes to town. It is the autumn counterpart to the Marburger Frühling — the city festival with which the people of Marburg conclude their season. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Marburg e. V..
Elisabeth — Marburg's Holy Patron Saint
The name is no coincidence: Marburg is the city of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207–1231). The Hungarian princess died here at a young age, her burial church, the Elisabethkirche, is one of the most important early Gothic hall churches in Germany — and the spiritual center of Marburg. The Elisabethmarkt takes place around this church.
Three Market Areas
The festival plays out on three axes:
- Regional Market on Barfüßerstraße and Steinweg — Farmers, manufacturers, and artisans from the Marburg region
- Creative Market on Steinweg — Designers, artists, jewelry, fashion from the region
- Social Market (Sunday) around the Elisabethkirche — Social and church initiatives, associations, ecumenical actions
"Golden Autumn" as Motto
The motto "Golden Autumn" shapes not only the market name but also the decoration: pumpkins, corn cobs, grapes, hay bales, autumnal flower arrangements. Anyone who wants to get to know Marburg in autumn should come on the Elisabethmarkt weekend.
Culinary Delights and Program
Roasted chestnuts, Federweißer (new wine), onion cake, apple wine from the Marburg region — the market is also culinarily autumnal. In addition, music, activities, and a family program on the squares.
