Historic Jahrmarkt with market rights from 1784 — on August 8th or the following Monday
In 1784, the Princely Hohenlohe-Bartenstein Office granted the municipality of Mainhardt the right to hold three livestock and traders' markets annually. From this tradition, today's Mainhardter Krämer-, Vieh- und Schweinemarkt has survived as the municipality's most important annual market day. The strict adherence to the date of August 8th makes the market a special case in the German market calendar — if August 8th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the market is traditionally moved to the following Monday. In 2026, August 8th is a Saturday — the market will therefore take place on Monday, August 10, 2026.
On market day, Mainhardt's town center fills with around 120 stallholders. The assortment is classically Jahrmarkt-style: textiles (bed linen, tablecloths, towels, shirts, socks), leather goods (shoes, belts, wallets), household items and kitchen appliances, tools and hardware, toys, sweets, dried fruits, honey, spices, snack offerings. The livestock and pig market component is now more folkloric — however, the historical name is deliberately retained as a reminder of the market's agricultural past.
Characteristic of the Mainhardter Markt are the street artists: puppeteers, clowns, jugglers, fire-eaters, and acrobats roam the market lanes, offering small performances. Local clubs and businesses participate with their own stalls or activities — the market day is also an important social meeting point for Mainhardt's approximately 5,500 inhabitants and the surrounding communities of the Mainhardter Wald.
Mainhardt is located in the southern Hohenlohe region, in the Schwäbisch Hall district (state of Baden-Württemberg), on the high plateau of the Mainhardter Wald. With around 5,500 inhabitants, the municipality is a central hub for the forest and sandstone region between the Murr and Brettach valleys. Besides club and fire brigade festivals, the annual market day is the central date in Mainhardt's event calendar — a tradition that has been maintained for over two centuries.
In 2026, the traditional market date (August 8th) falls on a Saturday. According to the Mainhardt tradition maintained since 1784, the market will therefore be postponed to the next working day — Monday, August 10, 2026. The town center of the Hohenlohe municipality will transform into a large market mile with around 120 stallholders on this day.
The assortment is diverse: all kinds of textiles, leather goods, jewelry, tools, household items, kitchen appliances, toys, sweets, honey, dried fruits, spices. Snack stands provide refreshments — Bratwurst, steaks, Käsespätzle, crêpes, candied almonds. Street artists — puppeteers, clowns, jugglers, fire-eaters, and acrobats — roam the market lanes.
