May 1st celebration with live music, bouncy castle, and Franconian delicacies
Pottenstein, the picturesque rocky town in the Bayreuth district, is a year-round magnet for hikers, climbers, and cave enthusiasts. On May 1st, the tourist bustle meets a real village tradition: the Maifest at the Bürgerhaus, organized by the Pottenstein Volunteer Fire Department. For years, this event has been the convivial start to the warm season in the Franconian Switzerland region.
The Maifest begins in the early afternoon and lasts until late evening. Beer benches are set up around the Bürgerhaus, a stage is prepared for the live band, and the grill is fired up. The fire department comrades tap fresh regional beer, and the female comrades bake cakes and pastries that were prepared in home kitchens days in advance.
A bouncy castle, face painting, and other hands-on activities await the little guests in the festival area. The fact that the fire department itself lends a hand ensures many sparkling children's eyes — there is usually an opportunity to inspect a fire engine up close.
Live music accompanies the afternoon and evening, along with grilled sausages, steaks, fries, and hearty Franconian classics. The coffee and cake area is particularly popular in the afternoon — an institution that many families from Pottenstein and the surrounding area don't want to miss.
The Maifest is not just a folk festival (Volksfest), but also an important source of income for the Pottenstein Volunteer Fire Department. The proceeds go towards equipment, training, and youth work. Those who celebrate here directly support one of the oldest and most dedicated institutions in the town.
Anyone visiting the region on May 1st can combine the festival visit with a hike through the Püttlachtal valley, a visit to Pottenstein Castle, or a tour of the Teufelshöhle cave. Pottenstein is located in the heart of Franconian Switzerland in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth — one of Bavaria's most scenic areas.
Pottenstein kicks off the month of May again on May 1, 2026: the Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the traditional Maifest around the Bürgerhaus. A day when the rocky town in Franconian Switzerland shows its most convivial side.
Live music creates the festive atmosphere, sausages and steaks sizzle on the grill, and homemade cakes from the club's women are served in the coffee and cake area. For the children, the bouncy castle is a sure bet, and face painting is a classic. In sunny weather, it's a perfect family day, celebrating the entire Bayreuth region.
The exact start and end times, as well as the main musical attraction, will be announced in advance on the Facebook page of the Pottenstein Volunteer Fire Department and on pottenstein.de.
Pottenstein can be reached via the B470 or from the A9 (exit Pegnitz). The Bürgerhaus is centrally located; parking is available in the town center and at the hiking parking lots. By public transport: Train to Pegnitz, then bus to Pottenstein.
Admission is free. Food and drinks are sold at typical folk festival prices; proceeds benefit the Pottenstein Volunteer Fire Department.
On a sunny May 1st, the Bürgerhaus grounds fill up quickly — if you want a seat at a beer bench, it's best not to arrive too late. In case of rain, the festival will largely take place inside the Bürgerhaus. Children can use the bouncy castle free of charge.
