Open-air art festival in the 'Gold Village' Altheim, in the heart of the Bliesgau
Kulturstammtisch Blieskastel e.V. has been the driving force behind open-air cultural events in the Saarpfalz region since 2014. Famous for BliesART in the old town of Blieskastel – the most recent major event in September 2024 marked the club's tenth anniversary, featuring around 30 artists from the region and the French partner town of Le Creusot – the association is expanding its concept in 2026 and, with altART, will perform outside the core town for the first time: in the district of Altheim, which, as an award-winning 'Gold Village' in the state competition 'Our Village Has Future', has long been considered a cultural anchor of the Bliesgau.
The concept is deliberately accessible and close to the village: artists from various genres – painting, sculpture, photography, performance – will be positioned with canvases and easels along the main street and in Altheim's village squares. A stage program with music, choirs, theater, and performance contributions for adults and children will run between the artworks. The whole event is framed by cozy meeting zones where Altheim's clubs, Bäckerei Lenert, and local restaurateurs provide food and drinks.
Altheim is one of 18 districts of the town of Blieskastel and is located in the middle of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau in the Saarpfalz district. The village received a gold award in the Saarland village competition – not only for its well-kept appearance with sandstone houses, cottage gardens, and the backdrop featured in the SR report "Blick ins Saarland", but also for an exceptionally active village community: the project RAThaus-ARThaus Altheim regularly transforms the old town hall into a cultural venue, and the Bliesgau character with its scattered fruit orchards, orchid meadows, and sheep farm shapes every event.
altART is aimed at art enthusiasts from Saarland, the adjacent Palatinate region, and Lorraine, as well as families and day-trippers looking for a mix of contemporary art and rural Saarland atmosphere. Unlike urban festivals, it thrives on strolling along country paths between the art stations, stopping at the courtyard cafés of Altheim's farmhouses, and watching the artists at work.
Those who want to experience more Bliesgau culture can combine their visit with the Saarpfälzische Sommerakademie in Blieskastel (July–August), the European Cultural Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim, or a detour to the Blieskastel Castle Park. Kulturstammtisch sees itself as a bridge between all these formats – altART is its newest village chapter.
With the first altART, Kulturstammtisch Blieskastel continues its established concept of decentralized art staging in the Bliesgau in a new district. After years of BliesART in the old town of Blieskastel, the association, together with the city administration, the Altheim local council, and local clubs, will transform the award-winning 'Gold Village' into an open gallery on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The detailed list of artists and program will typically be published by the organizer about a month before the event on kulturstammtisch-blieskastel.de. The format is based on the proven BliesART concept (around 30 artists, several music acts, hands-on activities for children, continuous catering).
The complete artist and stage program for 2026 is expected to be published in May/June 2026 on the Kulturstammtisch website. Experience from BliesART 2024: around 30 participating artists from Saarland, the Palatinate, and the French partner town of Le Creusot, music acts like "Fozzie", "CA VA", or flamenco guitarist "Lobo".
Free admission. Artworks are purchased directly from the artists; food and drinks are offered by Altheim's clubs at fair prices.
By car: A6 exit Homburg/Saar, then B423 towards Blieskastel, continue on the federal road into the Bliesgau towards Altheim. Approximately 40 minutes from Saarbrücken, about 60 minutes from Mannheim. Parking is available on the outskirts of Altheim – the village center is car-free within the festival area.
Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen station or Homburg (Saar) station, then continue with saarVV bus lines towards Altheim. Additional shuttle options are usually offered on the festival weekend – details on the organizer's website.
Admission to the open-air gallery is generally free – Kulturstammtisch is financed by sponsors, funding from the Bliesgau regional budget, and revenue sharing from artwork sales.
Directly in Blieskastel: Bliesgau Hotel, Hotel Hügelland. In the farmhouses around Altheim and Mimbach: holiday apartments and guesthouses. For nature lovers: biosphere reserve camping in Reinheim or Gersheim.
Plan your day with a walk through the Bliesgau (marked 'Bliesgau-Weg'), a visit to the Erlebnisschäferei Altheim (experience sheep farm) or the European Cultural Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim right on the French border.
