A Christmas Market with a Baroque Setting
The old town of Blieskastel is one of the most beautiful baroque towns in Saarland — and it is precisely this backdrop that gives the Christmas Market its charm. While other Christmas markets get lost in modern city centers or forecourts, Blieskastel benefits from an ensemble of historic townhouses, the palace-like complex on the Paradeplatz, and the historic market hall, which serves as a festive space. Anyone looking for Advent romance in Saarland will get their money's worth here.
Location: Paradeplatz and Market Hall
The market activities extend across the Paradeplatz, the adjacent alleys of the old town, and the historic market hall. This combination — open-air stalls under fairy lights plus a covered market hall for rainy weather — gives the Christmas Market its special dual structure. The market hall primarily features artisans and exhibitors with handmade gifts, while the Paradeplatz, with its mulled wine, food, and sweet stalls, forms the more culinary part.
The Stage Program
A dense musical supporting program runs on a festival stage in the middle of the market on all three days:
- School choirs and orchestras from Blieskastel and the surrounding area
- Performances by the Saarpfalz Werkstatt (Workshop for adapted work)
- Local music clubs — brass bands, brass choirs
- Mixed choirs and male voice choirs
- Various bands with Christmas repertoire
- Visits from St. Nicholas with gifts for children at set times
Culinary Delights from the Bliesgau
The offerings range from classic mulled wine (also in an organic version made from regional grapes), hot mead, punch, and eggnog to chestnuts from a wood-fired oven, cinnamon waffles, gingerbread, bratwurst, Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), and sweet crêpes. Many stalls use products from the surrounding UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau — Saarland apple wines, regional honey, homemade jams.
Dolmusch Special Services and Logistics
During the market, the Dolmusch, the Saarland community bus, provides special services from the surrounding districts of Blieskastel. This avoids parking worries — an important consideration, especially on busy weekends.
Blieskastel in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau
Blieskastel is the central town in the Bliesgau, one of the most valuable cultural landscapes in Central Europe — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2009. The Advent market is therefore also a perfect start to a weekend in this region: complement your market visit with a hike in the Bliestal valley or a trip to the Roman Museum Schwarzenacker.
