Open-Air Jazz Night in Luise's Garden at Festung Mark
As the summer evenings grow long and Festung Mark glows in the warm light over Magdeburg, Luise's Garden opens its gates for one of the most charming jazz events in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt: the Magdeburger Jazz-Nacht. The event, organized by agentur b in cooperation with Festung Mark, is a declaration of love for traditional jazz – for New Orleans, Chicago Style, and Ragtime, for everything that made the world swing between the 1920s and today's hot jazz.
The former Prussian fortress complex Mark, now operated as a cultural center, is located near the city center by Glacis Park and is one of the most atmospheric venues in the state capital. Luise's Garden – named after Queen Luise of Prussia – is a cozy courtyard with old linden trees, benches, and drinks served; in case of changeable weather, a covered stage ensures that the music never stops.
Each Jazz Night follows a simple, proven dramaturgy: two ensembles from the upper segment of traditional jazz alternate, come together for a joint jam session at the end of the evening, and send the audience off into the Magdeburg night late. Headliners of previous editions included the Barrelhouse Jazzband (Frankfurt), Hot Stompin' Jazz Band, Old Merry Tale Jazzband, Andrej Hermlin & His Swing Dance Orchestra, and Köbes Underground.
With now 16 editions, the Jazz-Nacht is a reliable anchor in the city's event calendar – alongside the Magdeburger Domfestspiele, the International Choral Festival, and the Magdeburger Stadtfest, it is one of the classic summer dates for a culturally interested audience. Tickets are regularly almost sold out – early reservation is worthwhile.
The 16th anniversary edition relies on proven strengths: a headliner from the top league of traditional jazz and a virtuosic special guest. The Barrelhouse Jazzband from Frankfurt am Main spans around a hundred years of jazz history with its repertoire – from New Orleans and Chicago Style to modern original compositions. The Jazzpolizei Trio provides the second half of the stage with wit and joy of playing. A classic of the Magdeburger Jazz-Nacht: the final jam session, where all musicians of the evening improvise together.
