Free admission, guided tours, workshops, and hands-on activities in two Ludwigshafen museums on May 17, 2026
The Wilhelm-Hack-Museum houses one of the most important collections of classical modern and contemporary art in Rhineland-Palatinate. Works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, the constructivist avant-garde, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, as well as extensive collections of non-objective and concrete art are on display. The impressive Joan Miró ceramic facade on the front of the building on Berliner Straße is also well-known. On International Museum Day, the museum opens its doors free of charge from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a diverse program.
The program includes themed guided tours through the collection and current special exhibitions, family rallies for children from preschool age, creative workshops for different age groups, and hands-on activities that provide low-threshold access to art. With a musical program as part of a guided tour Image – Word – Sound and the exhibition Art is Connection, which shows works by people with dementia, the museum broadens the perspective on the social function of artistic creation.
The Schillerhaus Oggersheim documents Friedrich Schiller's stay in Oggersheim in 1782, when the young poet found refuge here under the pseudonym Schmidt while fleeing Stuttgart. In the 2026 program, the museum is dedicated to the drama Wilhelm Tell and its themes of freedom, tyranny, and resistance. The program runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and includes readings, guided tours, and thematic activities.
International Museum Day is proclaimed annually by ICOM and is held under changing mottos. Several thousand museums worldwide participate with free programs and special events. In Ludwigshafen, the joint participation of the two museums signals the cultural diversity and accessibility with which the city aims to convey culture.
Detailed program and registration options for selected workshops will be communicated in advance by the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum and the Schillerhaus. For those who wish to visit beforehand, the current exhibition "Art is Connection" featuring works by people with dementia can be found at the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum.
