NEW-Pfingstfest — edition 2026
Four Festival Days in Brüggen

The organizer Bewusst Brüggen and the municipality of Brüggen coordinate the program with main sponsor NEW (Niederrheinwerke).

Pentecost in the Lower Rhine Castle Town
When the Lower Rhine Pentecost weekend tourism begins, head to Brüggen — the small castle town in the Viersen district on the Dutch border. From May 22nd to 25th, 2026, the 46th NEW-Pfingstfest will transform the entire town center around Brüggen Castle into a four-day festival mile. One of the oldest and largest Volksfests on the Schwalm — the tradition dates back to the early 1980s.
Opening Friday at 7 PM
The event kicks off on Friday, May 22nd, 2026, at 7 PM with an official opening by Mayor Marcel Johnen — tapping of the keg in front of the stage, followed by a brief welcome. Afterward, DJ Wombel takes over with a "Summer Vibes" set until late in the evening. The first festival tent atmosphere on Whit Friday.
Saturday — Rock and Pop
On Saturday, May 23rd, two rock and pop acts will grace the stage:
- The Quaver — a Lower Rhine rock band with a well-rehearsed cover repertoire
- FINE — a pop combo with a contemporary program
The mix targets a younger and middle-aged audience; the festival tent traditionally fills up particularly well on Saturday evenings.
Sunday — Soul, Cover, and Stilt Performance
Sunday, May 24th, brings two musical highlights:
- Chicago Rats — a 9-piece soul combo, one of the most distinguished soul cover bands in the region
- Just! — a party cover band with a broad repertoire
The visual highlight of Sunday is the stilt performance by "Naranjas" starting at 12:30 PM: oversized orange figures, created by the Amsterdam artist collective Stiltlife, will parade through the pedestrian zone, creating a spectacle that particularly appeals to families.
Monday — The Earls, Magic, and Acrobatics
Whit Monday, May 25th, brings rock back to the stage: The Earls deliver a rock show. In addition, there will be performances featuring magic, comedy, and the acrobatics show "Chapeau bas" — a sophisticated acrobatics program that visually shapes the Monday atmosphere. Whit Monday also features open shopping (stores open 1 PM-6 PM), making it the only festival day with the Brüggen retail sector fully open.
Castle Courtyard as a Gourmet Oasis
The courtyard of Brüggen Castle transforms into a gourmet oasis: wine, cocktails, regional Lower Rhine and Dutch specialties in a relaxed atmosphere. This format has established itself as a *chic* alternative to the classic beer tent Volksfest, attracting visitors who prefer to enjoy the festival in a calmer setting. The castle backdrop with its old walls and courtyard makes the castle courtyard the architectural highlight of the festival.
Over 60 Market Stalls and Kirmes
In the pedestrian zone, there are over 60 market stalls offering arts and crafts, jewelry, spices, candied almonds, leather goods, and much more. Alongside this, a traditional Kirmes with rides, carousels, and showman attractions is in full swing. This combination of market, Kirmes, and concert stage makes the NEW-Pfingstfest a classic multi-generational event.
NEW-Pfingstfest — The Name and the Organizer
The name refers to the main sponsor: NEW (Niederrheinwerke AG), a regional energy and utility group. The local organizer is Bewusst Brüggen, the marketing association of Brüggen's town center, in collaboration with the municipality of Brüggen. The economic pillar (sponsor, local retailers) and the cultural pillar (castle setting, program curation) form a well-coordinated team.
Brüggen — Castle Town on the Lower Rhine
Brüggen (approx. 16,000 inhabitants) is located in the Viersen district on the Dutch border, in the heart of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. The historic town center is clustered around Brüggen Castle, dating back to the 13th century; the Schwalm river flows through the town. Brüggen is considered one of the most beautiful small towns on the Lower Rhine and is a popular excursion destination for Dutch visitors from Venlo and Roermond.
