Schützenfest in a Historic Monastery Complex
Cappenberg is not just a district — it is one of Westphalia's most historically significant sites: a former Premonstratensian monastery (founded in 1122), now featuring Schloss Cappenberg as its main building. In this special setting — on the hill north of Lünen, overlooking the Ruhr area — the Schützenverein Cappenberg e.V. celebrates its annual Schützenfest. The 2026 festival spans two weekends: the General Parade on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, and the main festival from Friday, June 12th, to Sunday, June 14th, 2026.

Schloss Cappenberg and the District
Cappenberg is now a district of the town of Selm (Unna district) — historically, it was an important monastery complex. The current Schloss Cappenberg evolved from the former monastery, belongs to the von Kanitz family, and today hosts concerts, exhibitions, and the Cappenberger Kupferkopf (one of Westphalia's most significant medieval sculptures, kept in the monastery). The Schützenverein uses this historic atmosphere as an anchor for its identity — the festival thus possesses a depth that many other Schützenfeste lack.
Selm and the Unna District
Selm is a small town with around 26,000 inhabitants in the Unna district, located between the Ruhr area and the Münsterland. The town consists of the districts Selm-Mitte, Bork, Cappenberg, and Beifang. The Cappenberg district, with its historic monastery complex, is one of the most attractive and is increasingly being marketed for tourism.
