100% local Advent market in the Völklingen district of Luisenthal — supported by clubs and citizens
The Luisenthal Christmas Market is not a glamorous major event – and that is its greatest strength. Since the late 1990s, the Luisenthal fire station of the Völklingen fire department has been organizing the market in the Luisenthal district of Saarland, and it insists that all stalls be run by local clubs and private individuals. Commercial traders have no place here – a deliberate renunciation that gives the market its authentic character.
The market takes place on the former schoolyard in Jahnstraße. The grounds are transformed into an Advent atmosphere with Christmas trees, fairy lights, and festively decorated huts. Around 25 stalls – run by clubs such as the youth fire department, the women's choir, the parish council, the local history society, and committed citizens from Luisenthal – offer Saarland specialties, Advent decorations, handicrafts, and mulled wine.
A special feature of the Luisenthal market is the "Christmas Room": every half hour, a Christmas story is read here – for children as well as for adults. It is a quiet retreat in the hustle and bustle of the market, emphasizing the contemplative side of the Advent season.
Santa Claus arrives around 6:30 PM. Children receive vouchers at the fire department's stand, which they can exchange with Santa Claus for a package of sweets and small gifts – a tradition that has delighted young visitors for years.
Luisenthal is a district of Völklingen in the Saarbrücken regional association and is only a few kilometers from the UNESCO World Heritage site Völklingen Ironworks. The district has its roots in Saarland's coal mining and was once home to the Luisenthal mine – a piece of Saarland's industrial history that is given a warm present by the Christmas market.
The exact date for 2026 will likely be published by the Luisenthal fire station in November 2026. The concept remains the same: only local clubs and private individuals as exhibitors, a Christmas fairytale room, and a visit from Santa Claus.
