"Cellars — Churches — Pubs" — a night of music in 15+ venues in Luckau's Old Town
Luckau is one of Brandenburg's most beautiful small towns — a completely preserved medieval town layout in the north of the Spreewald (Dahme-Spreewald district), nestled within an almost entirely intact town wall. The town boasts exceptional architectural substance: the town hall with its Renaissance gables, St. Nicholas' Church (brick Gothic, one of Brandenburg's most significant sacral buildings), the Academy of Fine Arts, and the old residential buildings around the market square. In the 15th/16th centuries, the town was an important trading center in Lower Lusatia; its architectural substance today is one of the best-preserved examples of North German-Lower Lusatian Renaissance.
The Luckau Old Town Night leverages this substance. Instead of a single stage in the city center, the festival takes place simultaneously in over 15 venues: in St. Nicholas' Church, in the historic vaulted cellars of the Old Town houses, in the pubs, and in the courtyard of the Niederlausitz Foundation. You receive a map at the beginning and wander through the town — from one venue to the next, depending on your mood for music style and atmosphere.
The musical spectrum is intentionally broad: the opening concert in St. Nicholas' Church begins at 6 PM — usually classical or semi-classical programs, suited for the acoustic sacral architecture. In the cellars, blues, rock, and folk bands often play, their raw sound contrasting with the vaults. In the pubs, you'll find Schlager, cover bands, and pop. Irish folk bands are a regular program item. This creates a festival where no single style dominates, but the journey from one sound world to the next becomes the real experience.
A special feature: a shuttle train runs between Luckau and the nearby Spreewald capital, Lübben (10:10 AM - 0:10 AM), making the Old Town Night easily accessible from Lübben as well. This connection elevates a local event into a regional format and strengthens the cultural networking of Lower Lusatia.
