Eleven days of literature in Düsseldorf — around the written, spoken, and designed word, from October 10th to 20th, 2026, in Heinrich Heine's birthplace
From October 10th to 20th, 2026, the Literaturtage Düsseldorf will take place — a festival that doesn't focus on a single location but deliberately engages the entire city. The organizers are three central players in Düsseldorf's literary scene: the Literaturbüro NRW, the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, and the socio-cultural center zakk. This trio creates a festival that showcases the breadth of contemporary literature — from classic novels to experimental spoken word, from poetry readings to graphic novel presentations.
The official festival motto perfectly captures the concept: written (classical literature, novels, non-fiction, poetry), spoken (readings, lectures, slams, audio plays), and designed (book design, typography, graphic novels, art books, artist's books). This positions Düsseldorf deliberately more broadly than pure reading festivals; language is explored in all its media manifestations.
The complete 2026 program will be gradually released starting in summer 2026. Based on the 2024 and 2025 editions, the following recurring formats can be expected:
Düsseldorf has a rich literary history: Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), one of the most important German poets of the 19th century, was born here. The institute named after him preserves his estate. The University of Düsseldorf bears his name (Heinrich-Heine-Universität). In contemporary times, authors like Hatice Akyün, Hans Magnus Enzensberger (part-time), Ulla Hahn, and many others are connected to the city. The literary scene benefits from publishers, an active bookstore landscape, and the university's student body.
The Literaturtage traditionally take place at several locations:
The distributed concept allows visitors to explore different districts while experiencing literature in fitting settings — a poetry series at the Heine-Institut feels different from a poetry slam at zakk.
The 2026 edition continues the established festival in its eleven-day format. Save-the-Date for October 10th-20th is set; the full program will follow from summer 2026. Expect readings by prominent German-speaking authors, discussion panels on socio-political topics, slam evenings at zakk, a long reading night, and children's and youth programs in schools and libraries.
Program not yet fully published (as of May 2026). Expected format based on previous editions:
Admission varies by event — some readings and the children's program are free, others are ticketed (typically €5–€15). Tickets via organizers and on-site.
