Europe's largest Japanese cultural festival on the Rhine promenade with a grand Japanese fireworks display
Since 2002, Japan Day Düsseldorf/NRW has been the most important Japanese cultural festival in Europe. On Saturday, May 23, 2026, the state capital's Rhine promenade between Burgplatz and Apollo-Platz will transform into a 12-hour open-air event from 11 AM to 10 PM — followed by the Japanese grand fireworks display over the Rhine around 11 PM.
The motto for the 2026 edition is “What a wonderful World — A firework full of joy". It is explicitly intended as a statement on the reconcilability of art and culture — the grand Japanese fireworks display is staged as the central emotional symbol of the festival.
Japan is presented in its full diversity on several stages and in numerous pavilions:
Düsseldorf is home to the largest Japanese community in Europe outside of Japan — around 8,000 Japanese residents in Düsseldorf, with a focus on the Düsseldorf-Niederkassel district (sometimes called "Little Tokyo on the Rhine"). The Japanese school, the Japanese bookstore Naniwa, Japanese restaurants, and the Eko-Haus are permanent traces of this community. Japan Day originated in 2002 as a joint initiative of the city and the Japanese Consulate-General — as a gesture to make this connection visible.
The highlight of the day is the grand Japanese fireworks display around 11 PM. Traditionally composed by Japanese pyrotechnicians, it is one of the most spectacular fireworks of the year in Germany — the reflection on the Rhine doubles the effect. Thousands of spectators line the promenade and the Rhine bridges.
Around Japan Day, a Japan Week takes place with concerts, exhibitions, films, and lectures throughout the city. Those spending several days in Düsseldorf can deepen their experience — e.g., at the Eko-Haus, the NRW-Forum, or galleries in the Old Town.
Japan Day regularly draws several hundred thousand visitors to Düsseldorf. Those interested not only in art but also in cosplay culture, anime, and young urban Japan will find the largest event of its kind in the German-speaking world here. For the city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the day is one of the defining events in its annual calendar.
The 2026 edition is under the motto “What a wonderful World — A firework full of joy". Several stages, anime/manga/cosplay areas, culinary delights, and arts and crafts are spread along the Rhine promenade. The highlight is the grand Japanese fireworks display over the Rhine.
