Trotting races, stage program, and children's festival at Karlshorst Racecourse
The Familienrenntag (family race day) in Karlshorst is one of the most charming late summer events in the Lichtenberg district. When the sun shines over the wide sand track of the PSP Pferdesportpark, trotting race fans, neighbors from the Karlshorst district, and families from all over Berlin come together — many for the first time at a racecourse, and that's exactly the point: lower barriers, making horse sports accessible.
The Karlshorst track opened in 1894 and is now the oldest continuously operating trotting racecourse in Germany. The Familienrenntag usually features nine races on the program, including guaranteed races with five-figure betting pools. If you've never bet before, the staff at the counter will help you with the odds — the minimum bet is often only 50 cents, and the atmosphere in the stands is familial and never elitist.
While the sulkies circle the track, a packed children's program unfolds on the festival meadow: bouncy castle, pony rides and carriage rides, archery, face painting, storytellers. The Berlin Police will also mark your bicycle against theft upon request — a service that makes particular sense for families in Lichtenberg.
A colorful flea market with private stalls from the neighborhood springs up in the infield, alongside club stalls, a stage with local bands and choirs, and food vendors from Berlin's neighborhoods — from bratwurst to vegan bowls. The day traditionally begins with an opening speech by the district mayor.
Karlshorst is one of Lichtenberg's greenest districts. If you have time, after the race day, it's worth taking a walk to the nearby German-Russian Museum or a detour to the Tierpark Berlin (zoo). Both are within walking distance or a short S-Bahn ride away.
The Familienrenntag 2026 is expected to take place on the first or second Sunday in September — as in previous years. Nine trotting races with betting opportunities from small stakes are expected. The district office will open as usual around 12 PM, and the day will end around 5 PM or 6 PM after the last race.
Once the program is officially confirmed, you will find it on the Pferdesportpark website and in the press release from the district office. Those who wish to operate a flea market stall can register with the Lichtenberg District Office about a month beforehand — spaces are in demand and free of charge.
The detailed 2026 program will only be published shortly before the race day. Clues from previous years:
