700 Stalls, Design Classics and GDR Junk on German Unity Day
On German Unity Day, the Karlshorst Horse Sports Park becomes the mecca of Berlin's flea market scene. oldthing märkte, one of Germany's most experienced flea market organizers, occupies the 200,000 m² area with over 700 exhibitors — private individuals alongside professional dealers, old Berlin stock alongside art antiquities. The sheer size makes the flea market unique: you can spend a day here and only cover a quarter of the area.
The design fair runs parallel in the covered grandstand hall of the racecourse — curated stalls with design classics (Bauhaus furniture, Eames chairs, Danish Mid-Century design, GDR design icons), vintage fashion, jewelry, and art. If you want to look for an original Eames lamp in Karlshorst instead of Tempelhof, this is the place for you — prices are on average 30–50% cheaper than in the city center.
The location in Karlshorst — historically a seat of the Soviet military administration — makes the flea market a preferred trading place for GDR memorabilia: record players from the RFT factory, Sandmännchen figures, Pioneer scarves, Trabant models, Karat LPs. Berlin advertising signs, old tram signs, and catering furniture also regularly appear.
German Unity Day traditionally brings masses to the grounds — up to 30,000 visitors over the weekend. Live music plays in the beer garden under the pine trees, the beer and sausage stand operates in Oktoberfest mode, and food trucks with international specialties complement the classic stadium cuisine. Families will find play areas for children, and dogs are welcome on a leash.
The preview evening on Friday (October 2nd) is the insider tip: fewer visitors, larger selection, dealers often more willing to negotiate because they want to pack up. Saturday and Sunday are crowded but lively. If you're hunting for bargains: be there from 9 a.m. If you want to stroll: late afternoon, when the hustle and bustle subsides.
The 2026 edition traditionally falls on the weekend of the German Unity Day holiday. The preview evening is Friday, October 2nd — a separate admission category with reduced crowds and better negotiation opportunities. The main event runs on Saturday and Sunday.
The design fair in the grandstand hall has been expanded in recent years and is one of Berlin's largest vintage sales venues. Professional dealers from Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, and Vienna regularly attend. The open lawns are reserved for private stalls, where you'll find colorful flea market finds.
