Atmospheric Christmas market on Alter Markt in Lennep's old town on the 3rd Advent weekend
While the Remscheid Christmas market in the city center primarily caters to the big-city mulled wine hustle and bustle, the Lenneper Weihnachtstreff offers the opposite: historic old town setting, manageable size, and a grown atmosphere. From December 11th to 13th, 2026, the third Advent weekend, the Alter Markt in Remscheid-Lennep transforms into a small but special Christmas market. Twelve festively decorated wooden huts frame the historic market square; in the background, the Protestant Lutherkirche shines as an illuminated festive backdrop.
The organizer is Lennep Offensiv e.V., an association of traders, citizens, and initiatives dedicated to revitalizing the historic old town of Lennep. The program consists of:
The highlight for Lennep's retailers: On Sunday, December 13th, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the shops in the historic old town of Lennep — boutiques, cafés, bookstores, toy stores, antique dealers — will open for Sunday shopping. An ideal opportunity to do your Christmas shopping in a relaxed old-town atmosphere, with small, individual shops instead of big-city anonymity.
The Lenneper Altstadt with its Alter Markt, slate houses, and medieval town layout is one of the most beautiful preserved old towns in the Bergisches Land region. Lennep was an independent city until its incorporation in 1929 — which explains the high-quality bourgeois architecture with patrician houses. Worth seeing are the Röntgen-Museum (Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born in Lennep in 1845), the Klosterkirche, and the typical Bergisch slate and shingle facades. In Advent, the old town unfolds a special, almost fairytale charm with its fairy lights, illuminated windows, and small shops.
The independent city of Remscheid with around 110,000 inhabitants is located in the Bergisches Land, between Wuppertal and Solingen. Like its neighbors, it is a traditional tool and metal industry city — the "seaside town on the mountain", as it is called, has a long tradition as a production site for wrenches, tools, and files (Stahlwille, GEDORE, RUKO). Besides Lennep, the Müngstener Brücken-Areal with Germany's highest railway bridge (107 m) and the Eschbachtalsperre are also worth seeing. District festivals in the three "little towns" of Remscheid, Lennep, and Lüttringhausen have preserved local identity — the Lenneper Weihnachtstreff is one of the most prominent among them.
The Lenneper Weihnachtstreff 2026 offers the proven format: twelve huts on the historic Alter Markt, music program with local choirs and music groups, illuminated Lutherkirche as a backdrop. The Sunday shopping on Dec 13th invites you to a Christmas shopping tour through the individual shops of Lennep's old town.
