Children's Carnival Parade on Carnival Sunday and Grand Rose Monday Parade on February 16th – Gala Session of the KG Närrische Oberberger in the Festival Tent
Engelskirchen is located in the Oberbergischer Kreis, east of Cologne, in the Bergisches Land region. The region is more widely known for Schützenfeste and folk dance than for Rhenish Carnival. However, in Engelskirchen, the KG Närrische Oberberger e.V. has been cultivating a rich Carnival tradition for decades: gala sessions, children's carnival parades, Rose Monday parades – the full program in a community that is not among the major Carnival strongholds.
The Engelskirchen Carnival days in 2026 are spread across the Carnival weekend:
The highlight of the Carnival days is the Grand Rose Monday Parade on February 16, 2026, starting at 1:00 p.m. The route and assembly point will be communicated via engelskirchen-alaaf.de and through the VRS event notification. Experience shows that the parade goes through the town center of Engelskirchen with floats, walking groups, and music bands.
The organizer is the KG Närrische Oberberger e.V., Engelskirchen's central Carnival society. The Carnival society organizes events throughout the entire season – from children's sessions to gala sessions and the two parades on the weekend. The Carnival royalty (Prince, Princess, Farmer) are proclaimed at the beginning of the season in autumn.
The gala session on Saturday, February 14, 2026, starting at 3:30 p.m., takes place in the Engelskirchen Festival Tent. The program is typically Rhenish: speeches in Carnival style (Büttenreden), dance troupes, music bands, Carnival awards, Carnival songs. Admission with a ticket from the KG Närrische Oberberger.
Engelskirchen is a municipality with around 19,000 inhabitants in the Oberbergischer Kreis, in the Agger valley. It is known primarily for its industrialization history (LVR Industrial Museum) and its location between Wuppertal and Gummersbach. Carnival is more of an island phenomenon in this region – all the more pronounced is the tradition in Engelskirchen.

Anyone wanting to experience Engelskirchen Carnival should come to the Rose Monday Parade starting at 1:00 p.m. – the atmosphere is more family-friendly than in Cologne or Düsseldorf, the parade is more manageable, but authentically "bergisch" (from the Bergisches Land region). The children's carnival parade on Sunday is a lovely option for families with young children.
